What Are Stacks?

Developed exclusively by Themeco, Stacks are an innovative concept and available only in the X WordPress Theme. We’d like to take a second to explain what they are and how they can help you with the X theme.

First off, the easiest way to think of a Stack would be to think of a theme within a theme. As we all know, when you typically buy ONE theme, you are stuck with one particular style and design. If you are wanting to change the look of your site, the process usually involves browsing through other clubs and marketplaces to find a new inspiring theme that matches your needs.

While there is nothing inherently wrong with this strategy, we feel there is a better way to do it. Aside from the fact that you are completely changing over to a new developers way of doing things (and in so doing having to essentially recreate your entire site), this is extremely time consuming and all around frustrating. We felt this was a problem we could easily address.

Enter Stacks

As you may have noticed, most sites follow a somewhat predictable layout structure. Even though things look drastically different from site to site, it is more a matter of styling those elements as opposed to true foundational changes.

For this reason, we decided to take certain design styles and build an end-to-end solution so you could use one theme (X) while still having access to multiple design options. And don’t forget, we’re not just talking about unique headers and skins. These are completely unique and fully designed. There are currently four Stacks to chose from: Integrity, Renew, Icon, and Ethos.

  • Our all-purpose design, Integrity is great for business, corporate, or any professional oriented site. This is perhaps our most used Stack due to it’s general appeal and timeless styling. Learn more about the unique features to the Integrity Stack.
  • If flat is your thing, you will love Renew. This design is built with no gradients or shadows to capture the essence of the flat craze. If you like this design approach, you’ll definitely want to use the Renew Stack. Learn more about the unique features to the Renew Stack.
  • Icon is our clean and modern Stack that is great for people who like a more minimal approach to web design. With several unique features including a second sidebar, Icon is a wonderful option if you want to truly let your design get out of the way of your content. Learn more about the unique features to the Icon Stack.
  • Create stunning, engaging, and truly one of a kind magazine sites with Ethos. With several unique features configured specifically for magazine and newspaper sites, Ethos will engage your audience and promote clickthroughs. Learn more about the unique features to the Ethos Stack.

Q: When I buy the X theme, do I also have to select a Stack?

A: No. All Stacks come included with purchase. You simply select which Stack you wish to use once the theme is activated.

Q: Are Stacks like child themes?

A: No. Stacks are simply the full site designs we have built into X to provide our customers with truly unlimited styling potential.

Q: Can I still use child themes with the X theme?

A: Absolutely. As a matter of fact, we recommend it (as do the WordPress folks).

Q: Where can I see demos of these Stacks?

A: Right here.

At the end of the day, the thing to remember is that Stacks allow you to globally change the full site design while staying within the one and only X theme.

Hopefully this helps provide a little more insight into our Stacks. We provide extensive documentation and training videos for our customers, and we’re always a forum post or email away should you have any other questions.

I have downloaded the X theme through Themeforest.com, and would like to install a child theme. Do you provide child themes of each stack? Or are we supposed to make child themes of the stacks ourselves?
The full x-package that I downloaded does not provide a child theme, so I was just wondering where to find these??

    Thank you!

    Hi Ryan,

We do provide child theme templates in our member area for each Stack (in addition to many other helpful resources). You can register for access here.

    Thanks for the info.

Can we use multiple stacks on the same site?

For example if I want to have a section of the site that is one stack and another section that is a different stack.

    Thank you,

No, the Stacks are not interchangeable like that (can think of them like a theme within a theme in a way). You can find out more of the unique features of each by checking out the links placed above. There are many global options that are customizable no matter which Stack you are using, however those links above specify the unique aspects to each.

Typically if you need to change from on WP theme to another the process is painful and may involve really rebuilding the whole site Ouch! I am wondering what is involved if I wanted to change from one stack to another for a site that has significant content. How would this be done and how painful is it?

    1. Themeco

Good question, Cameron and you’ll be pleased to know there is absolutely nothing you need to do except click a button when changing Stacks! Keep in mind each Stack has its own unique features so if you utilized some feature in one Stack that was not available in another you would need to account for that (for example in Renew you can set the background color of certain areas that you can’t in say Integrity due to the intended functionality), but the Stacks or changing them do not affect your content.

Where do we go in wordpress to install these stacks. I see the main 4 under customize, but each one has at least 10 layouts per 4 and I’d like to test some of these.

I see demos everywhere online…but I can’t find a tutorial for how to actually install these layouts for stacks.

      Hi Ryan,

There is nothing to install with Stacks. It sounds like you are getting demos and Stacks confused. Demos can be installed from the X Addons page in your WordPress dashboard once X is active.

Once you instal a particular demo can you later change to the demo of a different stack? When I went to instal the demo content initially I got a message saying that doing this will “overwrite your customizer settings. This is not reversible unless you have previously made a backup of your settings.”

If I change to a different stack’s demo content in the future will it simply overwrite those customizer settings? Thanks!

    1. Themeco

That is correct. It will overwrite those settings and install the necessary new content, images, etc.

You do have to use one of the Stacks, but there are many ways to add/remove styling when using child themes.
