X update - most pages are now blank

Hello,

I just started managing a couple of old websites built in 2016 using X v4.4.2 / Cornerstone v1.2.4.
The sites are hosted on Siteground, who forced a Wordpress update, which broke both sites.
I bought 2 X license and followed all the update steps on Themeco’s docs to update them and bring them back to life.

I started with one of the sites on staging and the update worked, but for some reason, most pages are now blank; only the headers and footers are rendered in the browser and no elements load when I try to edit them in cornerstone. The only two pages that load correctly in the browse and on the cornerstone editor are the home page and the contact (https://staging4.accon.us/contact-us/)

You can see all the pages with all the original content on the prod site, which currently has the twenty twenty five theme activated; hence all the broken layout and the cs shortcodes. (https://accon.us/)

I’d appreciate your help and guidance on how to restore all these pages without having to rebuild them.
Thank you very much!

Hello Hazem,

That is quite a jump from Cornerstone 1.2.4 to 7.8.1 version. Could you create a staging site with the old version Cornerstone 1.2.4 version? The version update might be done one step at a time so that the JSON used in the latest version will not have any conflict. I will ask our developers for some advise on this.

Thanks.

Thank you @ruenel. Done; I provided the info in the secure note.
The active theme on this copy of staging is Twenty Twenty Five. Activating the old X theme crashes the entire site, including the admin panel, so please avoid doing that since I cannot give access to the DB.

Hey Hazem,

While my colleague is consulting with our developers, please try the manual update method outlined in our Doc here https://theme.co/docs/how-to-update

Basically, you’d need to delete X and Cornerstone and download the latest from your Dashboard. Once the update is successful which I see you already done in one of your staging sites, open WP Admin Menu > Cornerstone > Settings. Open the Permissions tab. Open Elements and check the All Classic Elements.

Note that this doesn’t guarantee that elements will show up. The version the site is using is very old and it will possibly need recreating or rebuilding.

Hey Christian,
I already updated the Theme and the Cornerstone Plugin according to the instructions in your Docs here https://theme.co/docs/how-to-update. That is what I did in the first staging environment I shared in the secure note.
I just checked the Permissions tab. All the items under Elements were already checked…
What else can we do? Can your developers check if the _cornerstone_data for these pages in the DB are valid?
I have a strong suspicion that it’s a matter of an obsolete item in there that’s causing the CS parser to throw errors, but unfortunately I have no idea how view such error to debug the process.
If it helps, I can share with you DB export of the wp_postmeta table and the post id’s of the affected pages.
Thank you.

Hello Hazem,

I tried to access your site dashboard, but the given credentials are not working on my end. Please recheck and send it to us again so we can check it on our end and guide you properly.

Thanks

Hi Prakash, it’s in the secure note of this message.

Hey @hazemrm,

I uploaded X 6.5.6 and Cornerstone 3.5.5 versions. The site give our some errors. Could we check the error log? We highly recommend that you provide us with your FTP access as well.

Thanks.

Sure thing, I’ve created an FTP user for you; see the secure note.
It doesn’t look like I can attach a log file here, so you can find them there.

Hey Hazem,

The X theme 6.5.6 and Cornerstone 3.5.5 versions were not successfully installed. It always throws an error. I have checked the web archive, and these errors have been going on since May 14, 2024.

I would recommend that it is best to recreate the pages from scratch using the latest version of the theme. You can always refer to the old pages in the Web Archive of how these pages looked. You can check it here: https://web.archive.org/web/20230531222914/https://accon.us/

Best Regards.

It seems like this would be the quickest resolution at this point.
Thank you for your effort everyone, much appreciated!

You are most welcome, Hazem.
