how can I add a widget next to the navigation in the footer. I added the area where I’d like to have it on the attached image.

Regretfully, there is no option to add the widget next to the Footer Navigation. It would require custom development. I would suggest you contact a developer who can assist you with your concern. Please note that we don’t provide custom development support. It is out of the support scope.
Alternatively, you can upgrade your X theme to a Pro theme where you would get Header/Footer builder, by the help of Header/Footer builder you can create a custom footer layout as per your design. https://theme.co/docs/header-footer-overview

Can I keep everything else the way it is.
Or do I have changes in what I got so far as well then when I upgrade now at the end of the customizing of the website to pro?

Once you upgrade to the Pro Theme, your current X theme settings will be copied over. The footer layout on the other hand is different because what you have now is a default footer. If you want to modify it, you will need to recreate a custom footer in the footer builder. There are footer templates that are provided in the Design Cloud so creating it wouldn’t be difficult. You can even customize it and insert your own design like adding a widget area.
