Pro 6.0 Beta - breadcrumbs & navigation

Hi Kory,

This isn’t a bug (probably) and more of a design choice, but it appears the navigation next to the breadcrumbs no longer appears (probably due to space), but I personally would prefer the navigation (design, primary, text etc) to be available next to the breadcrumbs as otherwise there is the constant scroll to find the section you want

and if that means the screen preview sizes etc get bumped to another location, so be it

also not too keen on having the delete button being so close to the navigation and that it is styled so similar.

I agree. That part just doesn’t look right. It looks like the delete button is missing a border on the right too.

Howdy, @scotbaston!

Thanks for the feedback here. You are correct in that the navigation for moving through the Element’s controls is no longer present along with the breadcrumbs in this release. With the general imperative of wanting to surface multi-document editing and making that a chief priority, we had many discussion on how to handle the reshuffle of things as that was going to take up such a critical space.

Ultimately, the breadcrumbs and toolbar ended up being combined as they are ultimately more “global” features in terms of the page building experience, and the “control navigation” ended up going in the Workspace header below the Element title as it is contextual to the Element itself. The main benefit here is that you clearly see the tabs up top with the controls for that Element, and they are always affixed to the top of the Workspace as you scroll, making moving between groups very easy.

The layer of navigation that is lost in this process is the “sub control navigation” for things like “Design” or “Typography” underneath the main grouping of “Primary” for an Element due to that space in the Workspace header being more condensed.

We know it is a slight workflow change, but for longer Elements under the “Primary” control grouping, when needing to make big movements the best thing is probably to CMD / CTRL + click a heading like “Setup” or “Size” to collapse everything at once, and then reveal the section you need.

If having back in the “sub control navigation” is of great importance to quickly jump to a section of an Element, one potential option I’m just thinking of off the top of my head is something like this:

Imagine that the currently selected tab displayed a caret to one side, and either clicking / hovering over this would reveal a dropdown with a way to quickly jump to that section. That’s one of the few ways I can think of how to get that functionality back in to that space, as the Element navigation will most likely remain in this position due to all of the other shuffling that had to happen to make multi-document editing work.

As for the Duplicate and Delete actions, I agree that on the left they at least need a divider between the “Delete” action and breadcrumbs. That is an oversight on my part. Another potential variation here, what do you think of this…

I could see moving those up into the Workspace header as options on the meta line. That way they are always available as you scroll through the Workspace and are placed in a more isolated spot.

Thank you and I look forward to your thoughts!

Thank you for your thoughts Kory,

the dropdown on the Primary would be a workable solution for me. definitely better than the loss of the functionality

equally I much prefer the suggested place for the Duplicate/Delete next to the inspector title
one upside of that is that ‘maybe’ there is more room for the breadcrumb to go under the inspector panel?

Sounds great, @scotbaston! I’ve noted this down. I do not think that moving the “Duplicate” / “Delete” buttons would reclaim that space for the breadcrumbs, because we still have the “Save Template” / “Manage Templates” buttons down there on the Templates pane, and we had thought of reserving that space for contextual Workspace actions.

Slight aside.

The save template naming box disappears off the page when panel is left oriented

@scotbaston, noted.

Hi Kory,

The new update looks great btw. The team has done a fantastic job!
I’ve not had loads of time with it yet but not much to complain about and people have found most quirks.

Only workflow suggestion I can see being useful if you are working on lots of elements in close proximity is in the inspector pane. currently you can navigate the Children tree and inspect deeper items. but you can’t come back as easily. I’m only suggesting a simple button to go to the parent element. Just like the up button on Windows file explorer .

if it could be an option to toggle on. currently I can’t think of a nice place to put it apart from to the right of the 3 tabs(primary…). if they get to the first item in the breadcrumb it could send you to the outline tab.

This might be good or more clutter I just found myself in a situation doing lots of edits where it would have been nice to not have to think and know I was going to the parent element and adjusting what I wanted.

Surely you can do that via the breadcrumbs in the bottom horizontal panel?

Or am I misunderstanding?

Yes you can do that although I find that a bit slow to work with IMO. Being able to jump in and out of elements quickly without having to think about it. I like to go quite quick when building up the framework. A keyboard shortcut to do this either would be a welcome addition.

@samc, I can see how having an option to go “up one level” now that basically the fully expandable outline is present in all Layout Elements would be helpful. I have noted this down, although I don’t know if it will make it into the final release at this time as we continue to work through other items, but thank you for the suggestion!
