Navigation Dropdown Menu Closes Prematurely

I’m having a problem with the Navigation Dropdown but only on the first submenu. When I tap on the top level menu item it pops open the submenu, as expected, but then the submenu disappears in an instant. It’s impossible to select one of the submenu items because they’re all gone before I have a chance.

Oddly, all the other submenus (5 other submenus) behave as expected. I can tap on the top submenu button and the submenu opens up and stays open. I can then choose any submenu item and it goes to the appropriate page.

This problem only occurs with the WP Front Page (Home) submenu. (And only on mobile devices.)

There is another problem with this menu which may or may not be related. The other problem: if I open a submenu but don’t select a submenu item—and then open another submenu, the two submenus are layered on top of one another.

What could be causing this unusual behavior?

Hello @WPDave,

Thanks for writing in! The Navigation Dropdown element is best for desktop screens. I would recommend that you use the Dropdown element and insert a Navigation Collapsed or Navigation Layered element inside it. You will have more control of the dropdown and the navigation submenus.

Hope this helps.

I’m still having some trouble with the menu not behaving correctly when using an iPad in landscape orientation. In that case, the menu still closes abruptly after opening and I am unable to select any of the menu items in the Home submenu. In this mode, the menu that’s in use is the Navigation inline menu. When the iPad is in portrait orientation it switches to the Dropdown/Navigation collapsed menu which works fine.

On my Android phone the menu works fine in portrait orientation but I have some problems in landscape. In this case, the submenu stays open, as expected, but as it expands there’s not enough space for all the submenu items so I still am unable to select the desired item in many cases.

On the desktop the menu works fine. But I still need to get the other two cases working properly.

Hey @WPDave,

Regarding the Navigation Inline, it does not close. What happens when you click the parent menu (that is a link) is it opens the link or page. That is the reason why other top menus seemingly work. I’d recommend separating the Home menu make it stand alone. Then, create another top level menu and move the sub-menu there. Set the top menu URL to # like the others. There’s no solution to this because this is the behavior of the Navigation Inline.

Regarrding the Dropdown, you need to swipe or scroll the page down to see the expanded menu. This is the nature of the Dropdown elelment. If you like a scrollable interface, please use the Off Canvas element instead of the Dropdown element.
