Migrating site from unlicensed version of X theme to legit version

Hi Guys,

So when i decided to launch my website utopiaplayground.com, i did so using a version of the X theme which was not obtained though the normal, authentic methods. The website was fine and in working order, but now i have purchased the X theme legitimately while it was on sale, to make use of the additional features such as cornerstone, which the authentic version comes with.

I tried to install the new, licensed version of the theme but it would not install as clearly it had the same root name as the unlicensed version. I have since, changed the name of the original unlicensed theme so i could install the new licensed version.

My problem is, now i have installed the new licensed version of the theme, there are some custom CSS and short-codes which are missing and the pages are not as i had them on the old unlicensed version. Is there a way for me to copy over all the custom code to the new theme?

Thanks in advance

Hello Remi,

The theme’s validation should not affect anything on the website like the things you have mentioned. What validation does is that it give you ability to install the bundled plugins and do the automatic updates for the theme and the plugins from your dashboard.

Perhaps the issue you are getting right now is caused by some other factors. Please try testing for a plugin conflict. You can do this by deactivating all third party plugins, and seeing if the problem remains. If it’s fixed, you’ll know a plugin caused the problem, and you can narrow down which one by reactivating them one at a time.

Let us know how it goes.

Hi Jade,

Thanks for your response on this. I have deactivated all the 3rd party plugins like you advised and nothing has really changed. I paid a developer a couple years ago to edit some of the pages and some of the website logic for user submitted posts and none of this is showing on the updated version.

Is there a way around this?

Thanks

Hi Remi,

I’m afraid the customization seems to be done in the wrong way. It seems that the developer that you hired di the customization on the main theme files. That is a wrong approach and now that you want to update the theme all the customization will be gone as the theme files are written over the old ones.

The correct course of action would be to do the customization on a Child Theme. You can learn more about how to customize the theme here and here.

I’m afraid you will need to hire a developer or contact the old one, to recreate whatever customization that was done on a Child Theme.

Thank you for your understanding.
