What Text Element Should I Be Using?

Hey Guys,

I want users of my website to be able to use the SEARCH (magnifying glass) Function of my website to search for employers by COMPANY NAME.

i.e. If the are six employers at different locations, all six will appear in a search.

I have built my website using a standard TEXT Element (Search DOES NOT pick employer names up) and I have tried a third party search plugins without success.

What TEXT ELEMENT should I be using, or can you RECOMMEND a third-party plugin that will search my existing text element used instead?

Hi Simon,

All content by TEXT ELEMENT can be pickup by search. See this: https://screencast-o-matic.com/watch/cYeh6MxQcW. If you experience otherwise, please test for a plugin conflict first. You can do this by deactivating all third party plugins, and seeing if the problem remains. If it’s fixed, you’ll know a plugin caused the problem, and you can narrow down which one by reactivating them one at a time.

If not cause by a plugin, please make sure themes and plugins are updated too. Check again after the update. If all are updated, please share site URL and credentials inside a secure note. Thank you.

Thank you for your response and I would like to reply to your last email in relation to the SEARCH ELEMENT and TEXT ELEMENTS.

Background: I have a DIRECTORY based website with 1,200+ Employer Names

The employers on the website have been created using:

Employer Name [HEADLINE ELEMENT, Tag = h1]
Employer Address [TEXT ELEMENT]

My issues are as follows:

Using the SEARCH ELEMENT (as seen top right of my Home Page) I am not getting the results as expected:

Below is an EXAMPLE of x1 of an employer listing (found via Green Button on Home Page).

State/Territory: South Australia
Region: Hills
Name: Benson Radiology
Address: Gumeracha Hospital, 2 Albert Street, Gumeracha, SA 5233

1.) If I Search by Name (ie. Benson Radiology) = Result is Nothing is shown by SEARCH ELEMENT
2.) If I search by Address (ie. Albert Street) = Result is Nothing is shown by SEARCH ELEMENT
3.) If I search by Address using FIRST word only (e.g. Albert) = Result is SEARCH ELEMENT shows the entire page and all other addresses with the word Albert in it.

Please will you take a look at this for me and I would welcome your opinion on what is happening. I am unsure why I am getting these poor Search Results and if you are going to suggest a third-party plug-in, PLEASE RECOMMEND one that will 100% work with my site (ie. as recommended by Apex that will not clash with my website).

Hi @Good_Usernames_Gone,

Just to make sure that we are on the same page, the search element final result is no different than the Wordpress default search functionality and we do not add any other additional feature.

Now, from what I know all the elements are visible to the default WordPress search feature. I am not sure how you implemented the directory that you talked about, but I performed a simple test on your installation and it shows correctly for me.

Please search for christopher or amirian using the top right search feature of your homepage and you will see the page that I added listing my name and surname. Try to change the text and you will see that whatever you add inside Headline element is exposed to the search feature.

Many thanks for your detailed reply and assistance to date…

What you uploaded an example to my website works perfectly well, HOWEVER there appears to be an issue regarding using the Search Element on MORE THAN ONE SEARCH WORD?

Employer Search Example

When typing FULL NAME of employer e.g. Spectrum Medical Imaging

Search Element RESULT = Does not find employer name at all?

BUT

When typing FIRST WORD ONLY of employer name i.e. Spectrum

Search Element RESULT = Employer name found CORRECTLY at (Morning Peninsula, VIC), (South West, NSW) and (Eastern Suburbs, NSW)

Address Search Example

When typing FULL STREET ADDRESS of employer e.g. Marryatt Street

Search Element RESULT = Does not find street address at all?

BUT

When typing FIRST WORD ONLY of street address i.e. Marryatt

Search Element RESULT = Street Address found CORRECTLY (at Western and Beachside Suburbs, SA) for Radiology SA, Port Adelaide Medical Centre, 60 Marryatt Street, Port Adelaide, SA 5015.

Can you Answer this Question Please?

Why is putting MORE accurate search details into the Search Element not bringing up any searches at all?

Your thoughts on this are welcome and feel free to click the green button on my Home Page and perform additional searches which also confirm this.

Note: On the example you put under Themeco TEST on my website, we are both using the same elements as each other – i.e. Heading and Text Elements

Many thanks for your thoughts on this and if this outside of a Themeco fix for some reason, can you suggest a Themeco recommended Third-Party Search Plug-In that may fix this search issue for my website.

Hello Simon,

The Page “WESTERN and BEACHSIDE SUBURBS” seems to be a private page. All of the contents is not searchable. To make sure that this is cause by the theme, can you please switch to TwentyNineteen theme and test the search again? If this is not possible for the live site, you may need to set up a staging site so we can test it.
