Validation Issue - Critical Error

Hi. I am having issues validating my X Theme. I finally managed to validate it after deactivating all my plugins and reactivating. But now it tells me there is a critical error. I’m trying to upgrade my theme to the newest version but its not liking me.

Thanks

Hi Bronya,

Thanks for reaching out.
It is not very clear what the cause of your problem is. I would suggest you update the X after reading the following thread.

Hope it helps.
Thanks

Yes, sorry.

I had made the changes as listed in that support documentation and things were working fine. My understanding from there was that the next step was to upgrade the theme from X8 to X10 which would be better in the long run. But I am obviously not great at this whole theme thing and don’t understand exactly what the process is and how dramatic the themes change between versions. I installed the upgraded X theme and everything broke. So I updated everything including cornerstone (I had to disable plugins to get the verification code to work but reactivated them all again) but then it told me there were critical errors. So I ended up just reinstalling my site backup.

I guess my question at the end of all that is this: If I leave it as theme X version 8 will it get to a point with Wordpress updates that the theme no longer works, do I need to keep upgrading the theme to keep the functionality and if I upgrade the theme each time there is a new version will it affect all the style changes I’ve made. Im sorry if they are stupid questions. I’m just trying to work out what I’m doing

Hello @bronya,

The older versions of the theme will work with WordPress up to a certain version only. We all know that WordPress keeps getting better and better. They have changed some of the codes that adhere to the latest technologies like Javascript, CSS, or PHP versions. At the moment, WordPress 6.2 is now using PHP 8.x version which is why we also need to update our theme to keep it updated and work flawlessly with WordPress.

All these updates including WordPress core updates were made to ensure security, remove site vulnerabilities and functionalities keep working. All of these updates do not affect any changes made to the site. All your settings, custom functions, and styling will be intact. You just have to clear your caches and regenerate the resources after every update especially if you are using 3rd party optimizing plugins, Cloudflare, and CDN.

We highly recommend that you clone your site to a staging area where you can do all the updates first. It would also be easier to troubleshoot in the staging area. The staging area can also serve as your backup.

Meanwhile, all the X theme versions 10.1.10 and below should work with WordPress 6.1 and below. We recommend updating the X theme to the 10.2.1 version first before updating the WordPress core to 6.2 to prevent the fatal error. All of these should be done in your staging area and once everything is perfectly working, you can proceed to do the updates on your main site.

Best Regards.
