V6:B2 | You guys are quick

Great update.

  1. Preview toggle opens to the right and is out of view

  1. Love the tab to the WP Page backend. This make so much sense now. Would it be possible to have the global ‘exit’ button in the CS menu now take you to the WP backend vs the WP Page Backend?

  1. Moving duplicate and delete back up to the Workspace Landmark is prime! Thank you. Styling feels a little out of place but I can live with that.

  2. Love the Go Up One Level button. Well done. :tada:

  1. Not sure what’s going on there…do you have your Workspace hidden somehow?
  2. We will consider this, but my first thought is that keeping the “variable” link in place for the Exit is still helpful for many people. Some might not find the link in the “Settings” for Pages / Posts and this still gives them a quick exit point out to their asset.
  3. Can you elaborate on the styling feeling out of place? We’re just utilizing the same type style setup for the top line in the header. We’re not trying to draw too much attention to it, just have them handy and readily available in a utilitarian sense.
  4. Yes, we’re enjoying it ourselves!
  1. Ahhh, I think I see it now…when I move the workspace to the left it looks like the dropdown is not changing positioning. I have noted this down.
  1. Yep – workspace left

  2. Totally fair. Personally, I find this being just an extra step. Almost never need the backend of the page but am always jumping back and forth between ACF, CPTUI, WP Core Settings, Menus, etc. All in WP Backend and none of which is accessible from the Gutenberg screen for pages.

  1. Honestly, not entirely sure what the right solution is here it just seems a bit cluttered with different style actions. Also a bit odd to share stylistic properties inline with non-actionable landmark title (e.g. inspector). Not sure if that makes sense so put this together.

  1. :tada:

I must say that @DoncoMarketing has some good points and solutions here at point 3. And for point 2 I also agree that I almost never need the backend of the page.

@kory Yes thanks for sorting that up level button. Really helps and props to the team on the quick turn around!

B2 also fixed to use the preview area even from upgrading from the old beta version so that was great.

  1. Agree with the exit button as usually I just want to get to the dashboard. but one extra buttons for the page also.

  2. Icons would not be frowned upon.
Which brings me to my last idea then I’m going to leave you alone!

5 . The Manage Element panel is great but could :gear:be a dropdown?
I find it just gets in the way but can understand newer users will find the larger interface helpful.
Top item being the management panel with all extra stuff under it?
you could even include extra items to remove clutter from the inspector header.

:gear:dropdown

  • management panel

  • Lock element
  • Edit Parameters
  • Save Template
  • Apply Template
  • Dev tool inspector

  1. This may have been mentioned - Templates tab: Save document | manage library are quite hidden.
These could also be in the header possibly?

OK have a great weekend and thanks for all the great work.

@samc, thanks for writing in!

#2. The “Exit” button now just goes back to the main WP Admin page. Contextual links are now found under “Outline” -> “Settings” as discussed above, so we’re all good there!

#3. We will be introducing an all icon-based look in the next release for the Element Workspace header, similar to what @DoncoMarketing has suggested above.

#5. There are no plans to move this at the moment, as that would be a significant refactor. The great thing about the floaters is that they remember their position based on where they were last dragged / resized. What many users like to do is drag things like this into a spot where it acts like a dropdown when it opens by just orienting it off a corner of the button that triggers it. As long as you leave it there, it will always open up in that stop and not get in the way too much…and a quick hit of esc can close it out. I’m not opposed to the dropdown idea, but at the moment the main goal is to get all the primary mechanics of what we have working and out the door for users as quickly as possible.

#6. There are no plans to move these buttons, as a similar mechanic is going to be added to the “Outline” pane in the next release to bring back the saving of “Section Templates” into your site.

Thanks!
