Upgrading to X (Pro) while keeping X-theme website live

Hi,

I have been an X-theme user since late 2016 and see that I can update my current live website to X (pro). Am I able to keep my current website live in x-theme and build the new version of my website using the updated X (pro) theme in a staging environment? I don’t want to upgrade my current live website theme to X (pro) if it will automatically convert my current live website to X (pro) as I have read that problems can arise from the conversion and can cause things/my website to not function properly/break.

Thanks for writing in! Yes, you can make use of a staging site. This is very useful because you can test drive any Pro theme in the staging area, do the customizations and troubleshooting without disrupting your current live site which is using X theme. Ok great. So my question is regarding the free upgrade that I am eligible on my account. When I go to my account, it says that I can upgrade to X Pro for free. If I do this, will this automatically upgrade my live website to X Pro? Or will I be able to leave my current live X theme website as is and use the downloaded X Pro theme in the staging environment? Having my live X theme website automatically update to the the X Pro theme would cause major issues and I want to absolutely avoid this. Thanks for the help!

Hi @gwickham,

To make sure that we are on the same page, the name of the theme that you will convert to is Pro, not X Pro.

The license upgrade is a one-way procedure and you will not be able to roll back to X. But the process needs the installation of the Pro theme. So as soon as you convert the license to Pro you will be able to use the Pro theme but it will not affect your current X theme installation.

I suggest that you follow the steps below:

  • Copy your website to a staging environment.
  • Make sure that you will update the X theme to the latest version in the staging website using this method.
  • Make sure that the staging version of the X theme is validated. Use this method. You will see a staging slot on your licenses page that you can use for the validation.
  • Now that you have updated, and validated staging version of the X theme, you can go and convert the license to Pro. (It will not change anything in WordPress yet, it will change only the license).
  • Then please go to your staging WordPress installation and follow these steps to convert the installation to Pro.
  • After that, please check the website to make sure everything works correctly.
  • Then, you can copy the website to the live version :slight_smile:.
