Unable to change default page template to sidebar left

Hi,
I have a custom category page. I have made the page template sidebar left/content right. I have added a sidebar in Appearance/Sidebars and named it to show on the custom category page. However the page just remains within a container and no sidebar. Please can you help?

You will have to edit the page and change the page template to default.
