Problem with Wordpress update and updating theme

Hi. I’ve just managed to restore my client’s website by reverting it to a backup from before the latest Wordpress update. And in the process learned about the issue and that it’s linked to the theme. Now as I understand it I need to update the theme before installing the Wordpress update to fix it. Only problem is that my coder failed to install a child theme back when she created the site, so now I’d lose the customizations made to the site if I update the theme.

So I’d like to know if there’s either a way to fix this issue without having to update the theme, or if it’s possible to update the theme without losing the customizations. Losing them and having to redo everything would be the last resort, so it would be nice if you could offer a better solution.

Yes, I’ve already seen that thread. But I’m not a coder, so I’d like to make sure that I don’t mess things up.

So the theme version that’s currently installed on the site is 5.1.5. So as I understand it this is the instruction relevant for my site: " If you are on Pro 5 or X 9, the line to add return; to is 260 ." That’s all I need to do to fix this problem, is that correct?

And since you didn’t respond to my question about whether it’s possible to update the site or install a child theme without losing the already existing customizations, am I to assume that there is no way to do that?

Hi @spektukal,

As you are not a coder, I would suggest you not add any code into the theme. Instead of that, update the parent Theme to its latest version by deleting the existing one as suggested in the reference thread.

Adding a line of code to a file shouldn’t be an issue. I just wanted to clarify things before I mess something up.

But updating the parent theme would delete the customizations, wouldn’t it? I assume you’re referring to the part about “removing the folder and downloading a new copy through the dashboard”. This is being recommend if you are already on the latest Wordpress version, in which case you wouldn’t even be able to log in to Wordpress. But I have already reverted to an older version to an older version. And like I said, updating the theme without having a child theme installed tends to remove all the custumizations. And I would really like to avoid that from happening.

Hey @spektukal,

You can stick to Pro 5.15 if that is your preferred version of Pro. Just follow the recommendation above regarding how to fix the issue of an infinite loop caused by the WordPress 6.2 update. If you made the customization directly to the parent theme, it will override the customization you’ve made after updating the parent theme to the latest version.

Yeah, that’s what I thought. And it’s not like I just really like that specific version. I don’t really have a choice since I don’t want to lose the customizations. But I guess there’s no workaround for it so I’ll try the solution with the code insertion.

And I’ve just added the line and updated Wordpress and everything’s still working fine. Thanks for your help.
