Pro 6.0 Beta 1 - Building Headers / Footers

In my upgraded site my header is not working as expected but it does have “bars” for the existing header with all the associated “Bar” settings. (I can’t create new “bars”)

Perhaps I am missing something but in my fresh site I’ve attempted to create a header. I don’t seem to be able to create a “bar” and if I create a “section, row, div or grid” I do not have any of the options associated with a “bar” like sticky, shrink, position etc.

There also doesn’t seem to be the option to select “top, left, right or bottom” options to create different navigation placements.

for the top, left, right, bottom options you need to turn on multi-region in settings in the header builder

Thanks. That is a bit obscure… is it in the new docs? I can see that being a real pain point for people. I clicked that setting and couldn’t see that it did anything :frowning:

I saw someone else mention it (maybe Josh?)

The idea behind it being it was more of a power setting, and hiding it made for a cleaner interface.

Personally, I use the bottom header quite a lot on mobile for contact (email, call etc)

I see the “bar” also becomes available once you activate it. Personally this should be on with the ability to turn it off for those that don’t want it or it should be much clearer and obvious. I clicked the setting several times but never figured out what it did until you told me.

@urchindesign, @scotbaston is correct in that I referenced in another thread that we wanted to make the initial editing experience simpler for users just getting into the tool. The “Left,” “Right,” and “Bottom” regions all have some very specific use-cases to them that can make it very easy to “mess up” your site if you are not careful with how things are styled and responsively hidden. This is less so with the “Top” region, which is relatively straightforward to understand and work with as it operates very similarly to the rest of the builders. Selecting the “Multi-Region” option as was mentioned here is the way to get those back…although they do have some styling issues at the moment that are being looked into.

As for the Bar Element showing up in the “Layout” Elements when in the Header Builder specifically, I think that is important to get in for that specific use-case.

I presume this means that the “Bar” element should be available in the “Layout” section of the elements. (Yesterday I couldn’t find it at all. Maybe trying to fit in beta testing would I should be working is part of my problem :-))

Considering new users I would probably also switch the wording from “Bar” to “Header Bar”. I can see new users struggling to find the “header type” settings and not knowing what a “Bar” is.

That said, perhaps in the “header / footer” builder sections, divs and bars could all have the "header type settings so we aren’t stuck using a bar?

I think for most use cases, adding a Bar in a header/footer should still be the default choice

(same for section in the page builder)

with the option to add other layout/elements if you wish.

as for the suggestion of ‘header’ type settings on sections, divs etc. I quite like that idea but wonder what the benefits would be? for example making a section of a page sticky could be useful (ie an internal page menu that sticks to the header when it has scrolled up the page)

For me there are things I don’t like with the “bar” so it would be nice if, when in the header or footer builder, if adding any of the “Layout” elements as the primary container it had the settings of a bar with things like fixed, sticky etc.

Good discussions here. @urchindesign, I wish adding the Bar settings to another Layout Element like the Div were as simple as that. Unfortunately, the Bar is built around some very specific design foundations; namely, designing around fixed height dimensions with the ability to allow simple overflow scrolling for things like navigations on Mobile. I think for the core of this thread, the main thing we need to ensure is getting the Bar back into the “Layout” grouping when in the Header Builder at least. Could go into Footers as well, but now that everything is kind of available everywhere rather than the strict limitations we used to have, we feel that using Sections / Divs / Rows / Grids is more appropriate for Footers, but Bars certainly have their place there as well. I will see what we can do about getting more visibility for that Element when in those contexts.

Perhaps the “Bar” should be the default when opening a new header. I think for people that have been working with Pro this isn’t too much of an issue but people new to the theme are going to struggle and not know (1) what a “Bar” is and (2) the difference between a “Bar” and another element and the fact that it contains settings that are useful to building headers.

The Bar will be moved up to the “Layout” group in the next Beta, so keep an eye out for that!
