Pages or Posts with Essential Grid

I am unsure what is the best option to use with the Pro theme pages or posts and especially if I am using the Essential Grid. When I applied the featured image for the page, nothing showed up on the grid test page, but it did show up on the post page so I assume the answer would be to go with posts? Do people use posts more with the Pro theme or pages? Thanks in advance.

Hi Grace,

Thank you for writing in, Although Essential Grid is commonly used in Posts Grid and Image gallery, it should work as Page Grid just fine.

If you choose a page as your source, make sure you define the pages that you want to show up on your grid.

Essential Grid

Hope it helps,
Cheers!

Ah that‘s why the featured image was not showing up! Setting up posts is more work because you have to add the categories. For a portfolio website would you use posts or pages with this theme and plugin? Thank you friech.

Hello Grace,

Please understand first the relation and difference between Posts and Pages. You can check this out:

Meanwhile, for portfolio items, we also have provided a custom post type name as Portfolios. It is available right in your dashboard. It is best that you use this post type to avoid any conflicts and issues. This is very useful so that you can separate your portfolio items away from blog posts and pages.

Hope this makes sense.

Thank you ruenel but I am not sure if I should use pages. I have those set-up right now. I asked the question if posts are better to use with this theme and the Essential Grid because I want to use the best option for this job. Do you create a gallery then add it from the gallery or media? Why isn’t there a portfolio option for pages to avoid conflicts and issues? I am not sure I need the portfolio option if I am using the slider at the top of the page. I am open to using the custom post portfolio option but does that show a gallery of images in rows for example? Here is an example of one of my pages:
https://eagleheartdynamic.com/shiatsu-therapy-graphic-design/. I am open to doing it differently.

I haven’t done anything to my website in a while. It’s time for an overhaul and I am glad that I am using Pro. I was thinking of using Envira gallery. Is this part of the custom post portfolio option? That was actually a smart move on the developers at Pro to create a custom post portfolio to separate it from posts and pages. What is the difference with this option?

My pages are set up so that I have a slider at the top so that people can take a quick peek and then they can download the PDFs as alternative viewing beneath that slider if they want to look at the jobs in full. Perhaps I should just create a gallery that links to the PDF and can be downloaded. Not sure what the best way to approach this is. I have new stuff that I want to put up but some pages only have 1 or 2 items so using a gallery might not work unless I show clips of the job.

Hello Grace,

In your WordPress dashboard, you have posts, pages and portfolio.
PID_JLZ4TU2cXy_mSGhfEQ

Posts are blog content listed in a reverse chronological order (newest content on top). You will see posts listed on your blog page. You can add and edit your WordPress posts from the ‘Posts’ menu in your dashboard. Due to their reverse chronological order, your posts are meant to be timely. Older posts are archived based on month and year. As the posts gets older, the user has to dig deeper to find them. You have the option to organize your posts based on categories and tags.

Pages are static “one-off” type content such as your about page, privacy policy, contact page, etc. While the WordPress database stores the published date of the page, pages are timeless entities. For example, your about page is not suppose to expire. Sure you can go back and make updates to it, but chances are you will not have about page 2012, about page 2013 etc.

Pages are not meant to be social in most cases thus do not include social sharing buttons. For example, you probably don’t want others to tweet your privacy policy page in most cases.

If you want to add portfolio items, you will have to use the Portfolios section where you can find in the dashboard as shown in the screenshot above. Yes, the portfolio can have a gallery. You may check out this documentation:

Yes, you can create a page or a portfolio where it will contain a gallery and then each of the images in the gallery can be link to a PDF file.

Hope this helps.

Yes ruenel this helps a lot. I know the difference between pages and posts but I just didn’t know which worked best with this theme and the Essential Grid plugin. I am leaning more to using pages because I don’t like the idea of people having to dig for information and this wouldn’t be a social website just a reference website for potential remote employers. This is more of a static website not like my other blogs. Therefore, I will use pages and the custom portfolio post option. I like the fact that you created another option for portfolios. Smart move!

I took a peek at the link. I didn’t know there was a slider with this feature. I was going to use Metaslider so would you say that using this slider is more compatible? Can it do what Metaslider can do? Also, can I use my custom sizes in a gallery so that they are the sizes of the jobs I did rather than one size and shape?

For example, I encountered a problem with Essential Grid where my banner ads after being placed were blurry. It was in one of their templates where the ratio of the grid was 4:4. I created my own grid to test out the 4:3 ratio and the ads were a lot more proportional and sharper. I suggested to support that they create a grid where we can use our own custom sizes without these parameters and they are going to look into it. My question to you is, do you have this option as well, where the gallery images can be different sizes rather than the uniform squares or rectangles more like the Cobbles grid in Essential Grid?

Maybe what I will do is create the gallery beneath the slider rather than just listing the PDFs. It would be more visually appealing as long as I can link the gallery photos to the PDF.

Hey Grace,

To your question,

Yes, using the Gallery Slider is surely compatible with our theme as it is a theme feature.

I’m sorry but we don’t know the features of Metaslider. You will need to compare our slider and Metaslider yourself.

Yes. Just use a high resolution image so that you won’t get a blurry image. I’d recommend an image higher than 900px in width.

Yes, same answer above.

Hope that helps.

Great! Thank you Christian. I am going to do a test page for the graphic design intro section since they are already done in squares. I will start a new thread about the Portfolio post if I have any questions or issues.

@designerwriter,

We are glad were able to help you.

Thank you.
