Non-Beta / Feature Request - Carousel Everything

Sorry for off-topic, but i’ll take a chance.

I think, Carousel of any CS element should be the first in list of next releases. I got a real pain with mobile/adaptive designs. It’s about minimalism. In a past i was using Classic Slider element as a carousel to carousel elements with shortocodes (Integrity 1). Now it becomes a past, shortcodes are some kind of outdated stuff and it will be great if we will have a native element to carousel v2 elements like testimonials, images inside new grid element etc. It will help to save a big amount of time and make designs more minimalistic for mobile devices. Right now i’m using The Grid plugin for this purposes and it’s kinda hard to do.

P.S. If some of community members can share their solutions for slide/carousel elements without any plugins i will appretiate it!

A longer and a bit cumbersome native option is to drop a Global Block per Classic Carousel slide, or per simple HTML/JS slider.

I agree that there should be a V2 Slider element, ideally with sliding containers that can accept any V2 Element.

This feature should be used responsibly though, as it can dramatically reduce CTR on the page, if important content is placed in subsequent slides. Also an automatically moving carousel is a no-no in most cases.

I’d add that advanced containers are quite an important feature. Link wrappers, shortcode wrappers, tabbed containers, sliding containers… All the versions that can accept drag 'n drop of V2 elements.

+1 for a V2 slider element.

There’s actually a couple of other elements still missing like a gallery, icon list, feature list (with the animated connector), and a pricing table. Although a V2 pricing table element likely isn’t going to happen.

I can’t say when this will fit into our release cycles but it is on our radar.

This is the direction we feel is most appropriate given the current state of things. Each “slide” would likely still have a set of background controls, but it would simply allow you to arrange your elements inside as needed. There’d probably be a set of flexbox controls so you can align your child elements inside the slide.

Please also add a lightbox option

That’s great. Perhaps this could also open the path to replace many “Content” areas with ones that accept other elements in the future. For example, the Content Area Off canvas, Tab items, Accordion items

Maybe they can stay simple as they are, but with an option to turn-on the “advanced container” as needed.

That’d be nice.

That would open up a whole new rabbit hole to get lost down!

@scotbaston haha, you are right.

While right now we can add Global blocks into those places, essentially getting the same result, the process is a bit long and cumbersome. Some solution that would reduce the number of clicks would be most welcome. I also imagine a way to select a Section inside the content builder and “save it as a global block”. That would speed up things too. All the content area elements could have the “Insert global block” option.

This is still not as ideal as drag&drop V2 elements into containers, as they still have to be edited in the “Global Blocks” interface. Unless they can be edited inside a popup window or something.

I am just theoreticizing here. Basically have no clue what am I talking about.

We wouldn’t remove/refactor the existing elements, but it does create the possibility of new modal/dropdown/off-canvas as new parent container elements.

Bringing back the Carousel topic. This is not Beta/RC related.

My suggestion regarding the future Slider element is that it could have an option for Carousel Structured Data Markup.

As a matter of fact, there are more various Structured data types that are defined by Google, and some of them are candidates to enhance old elements with structured data or inspiration for new Structured Data-powered elements.

Enhancement candidates

  • Text Element - Can get Article Schema option. (Yoast adds it to Blog posts, but there is none for Page Post Type. Also the Speakable Schema, as soon as it comes out of Beta.

  • Accordion - Could get FAQ and How-to Markup options

  • Video Element - could get Video Structured Data option, (and an option to fire it up in a lightbox, so it doesn’t load on the page-load).

New Elements

  • Carousel with carousel Structured data
  • Event element, with event data (This is covered partly with the Snippet addon, but then the whole page has to be just for the event, and other types need to be added manually).

Thanks!

Thanks Misho! Once things settle down with the release I’ll add your notes to our issue tracker so it can be taken into account for future planning discussions.
