Need guidance with WPML plugin

Hi! I’m back with a few more questions.

After understanding that Polylang will not be supported by X, I went and purchased the WPML plugin and though I won’t have much trouble but it looks like I’ll need some assistance on some matters.

  1. As I’ve added a second (Russian) language to the page, the translated pages last section turned out to look some thing like this:

I’m not certain what the issue is, but I figured I won’t touch any thing until an expert takes a look so I don’t break any thing further. The original page is fine though.

2.In the top menu I have a link that scrolls down to the section of the page. It appears correctly in the translated page, but in the original language it appears as active, which I don’t want. Since both links are the same but some how reflect different settings, can you give me some advice how to fix the issue? If it’s really complex and requires going under the hood, may I ask you to be as specific in your steps as possible as I’m still learning and wouldn’t want to break any thing.

Here’s what I’m looking to fix in photos:

a) How it should look on the main page

b) How it actually looks

As you can see, the middle word is active at all times. and I’d like to switch it off.

3.Finally, the language icons are spaced way too far from one another and I was hoping to bring them back together. The WPML has a custom CSS box, which they suggest to use to make amendments, but when I tried to alter CSS it didn’t reflect any changes. Perhaps your CSS is overriding the WPML’s plugin.

Hi,

  1. It look like you have edited the page outside Cornerstone.

If that is the case, you will to recreate your page from scratch as the cornerstone data is corrupted.

For more information in translating the theme using wpml kindly refer to link below.

  1. You need to create two menus. One for your one page and another for regular menu.

Your onepage menu should only have ids as link

Then on your regular menu you should have full link

Then in your homepage you need to enable or select your one page menu under page settings.

  1. To make it closer, you can add this in Theme Options > CSS 
.x-navbar .desktop .x-nav > li.wpml-ls-item a {
    padding-left: 5px;
    padding-right: 5px;
}

You may change 5px to adjust the spacing.

Alrighty, I’m back.

So I can’t seem to resolve the issue with WPML support. Not sure why being treated like an idiot, but that’s a different story.

The issue is, the main language that I have on the page (Latvian) renders on the main page properly, however, I’m not able to access Cornerstone on the translated (Russian) page. First it was giving me an error relating to the link, but then I changed settings in WPML. I changed the URL format in the WPML plugin’s Language section from “Language name added as a parameter” to “Different languages in directories” it would load cornerstone, but no content would display at all.

I then went and copied all content from the Original language and pasted it into the Translated page in hope that some thing may have been corrupted (by the way I DID NOT ALTER THE CODE IN ANY WAY), pasted that in and it still won’t render properly.

Now there’s one thing to note and I’m not certain if that’s the case (I was assured by WPML support that I’m still able to translate the page) but what I have purchased from them is the cheapest license which is smth like ‘‘blog translation’’ and some two plugins are not there. Having said that, their support says the page should still translate if I do it the way it’s described here:

Hello There,

You will have to do this step because copying and pasting the contents will not work. It will not display anything if you just copy and paste the contents of the page.

Please edit your Latvian page in Cornerstone. Go to the Layout > Templates tab and export the page as a template. And then edit your Russian page in Cornerstone, go to Layout > Templates tab and import the page template. After importing it, you can start translating the Latvian into Russian language.

RueNel, I love you! This worked perfectly for the main page. I’ll get to translating it and will try the blog section a bit later.

For the blog to work though, do I duplicate the actual blog page the same way or some thing has to do with the Post as well? I Guess I’ll try and see.

Either way, it’s a huge step forward. Thanks for having my back!

Yes, you will have to duplicate them, or you can create them empty and just export/import the content as template as Runel said :slight_smile:

So far so good. There are a couple of items I was unable to fix though.

For example, the below code didn’t work at all:

Any other advice on how to get the flags a bit closer one to another?

Secondly, in the mobile version, the Latvian page has a gap between the first section of the page and the top navbar filled with blank space.

I used the following code to remove it…

.x-gap {
    margin: 0 0 0 0 !important;
}

Which worked, but only on the Russian page. The change is not reflected on the LV page. Not sure why though. Any advice?

Finally, does parallax work in your browsers when viewing the page? It works when I’m in Cornerstone mode, but not when I’m viewing them normally via browser. Is this normal?

Ok, perhaps I just need to clear my cache.

This seems to have done the trick. Again, thanks so much.

I hate to bug you, but my last question relates to fonts.

I need to some how include the ‘‘extended’’ version of google fonts, to reflect Latvian properly. Right now, some letters appear thinner than they should be. Do you happen to know where this setting could be changed?

Can you clarify which specific font extended version you are looking for?
Font can manage on Templates > Font and Theme Options Typography.

I visited the page you are referring to, but it doesn’t show the options I’m looking for.

To be exact, here’s a screenshot from google fonts. Check marks are the extended features I’m looking to include:

I haven’t settled on the font yet, perhaps just keep the current one, but need the Latin Extended version to check whether characters such as ā,š,č,ņ,ļ render properly. Currently, such letters appear thinner than the rest of the font.

Within the Layout settings all I can choose is the font and it’s weight.

Hi,

You are correct, it does not include that option.

For that one, you need to add the font manually by adding the @import code in Appearance > Customize > Additional CSS

eg.

@import url('https://fonts.googleapis.com/css?family=Lato:100,100i,300,300i,400,400i,700,700i,900,900i&subset=latin-ext');

I’ve been waiting to see how the WPML integration is doing with X/PRO, it seems that there’re still a lot of bugs.

Could you confirm that your website is functioning properly and you have headers/footers working fine with multiple languages using WPML? :slight_smile:

Hello There,

Thanks for updating this thread! When translating a page built with Cornerstone or Pro editor, you will have to duplicate the page and make use of the editor template manager to import/export into the page before you can start your page translation. Moreover, the header/footer can now be translated if you are using the latest version.

I can confirm all works in order now if you follow the suggestions above (ie duplicating and pasting content in the translated page).

It doesn’t work, however, if you simply create duplicates in the desired language as for some reason it just won’t let you edit content. By that I mean the page simply won’t load. It seems as if the info is getting corrupt when doing it automatically, so some manual steps are required. If those are done properly, all worked out just great!

I have to note theme.co’s support was also more valuable than what I received from WPML.

One final thing to note, I was using WPML’s simplest ‘blog’ license, so it may differ if you go for the more expensive one, which has additional plugins to work in cornerstone. I can’t guarantee, but you can try. I also was NOT using a Pro X version for this page, so I hesitate to answer how it would work out if you’re using the Pro license of theme.co’s template.
