Is it safe to completely remove MEC and reinstall without losing current settings and entries?

Thanks for writing in! The latest supported version of MEC is 5.4.6. You can check it right here:
I would recommend that you login to your FTP and browse to the plugins folder, wp-content/plugins/. Delete the modern-events-calendar folder. This is the safest way to delete a plugin without accidentally deleting any event entries. Once the folder is deleted, head back to X/Pro > Validation > Extensions section and install MEC plugin again.
