Google Tag Manager and Parent Theme

I have read the procedure regarding installing GTM via a child theme.
My initial setup due to ignorance modified the parent theme.
I have no child theme installed.
For my edification without using a plug-in , am I to now install gtm to the parent or child ?
How?

Thank you for writing in, please download and set up the X child theme, follow this documentation.

Then redo the procedure you did on the Parent theme to the Child theme, and make sure the child theme is active.

You can then remove the code you added on the parent theme.

The customizations I have made on the parent or curently active site,will these be lost if I install a child theme?
I have not installed GTM as yet on the parent.

Hi @wannid,

The codes you have added in the files should remain as is. However, you should move those changes to the child theme because if you leave them in the parent theme, those will disappear when you update the theme version.
