Feature Request - New layout Pane: "Expand All" Option

I have experienced this with Skeleton mode, and now the same is with the new Layout pane:

If I want to reach an element deeper in the structure, or if I want to move stuff around, I often need to expand lot of sections/rows/elements. It can be tiresome and time consuming.

I would like to see an option to expand all the child elements. Maybe a right-click on the Element in the Layout pane?

Mind-mapping apps have similar right-click behavior, where you can select if you want to expand everything, or just the direct children of the selected element, or everything under the selected element.

Of course, then the “Collapse all” option would nicely complement this functionality.

Thanks!

Great points here. I like the right click idea. It may be useful to have the same right click actions right in the Layout pane, and we could just add one more section in that context for expand/collapse functionality. We’ll talk through this with the team a bit more.

Great!

One thing though:

When right-clicking on background images of containers in the inspector, it should still allow the browser’s behaviour due to “view background image in a new tab” option. It is native in Firefox and can be enabled through an addon in Chrome.

I use that function a lot, and I have seen that it is an important option for many users. Mostly for previewing the filename and direct downloading the bg image.

I don’t really think we should get into adding options that tie over to native browser functionality. It’s kinda like once you add one, there’s no reason not to add more and that menu shouldn’t be getting too large.

I could see us adding some kind of modifier key you could hold down while clicking to prevent the app context menu from appearing. We could also add a preference to disable it altogether. Personally, I’ve been annoyed that I can’t use it to “Inspect Element” anymore.

Update: Holding down ctrl or cmd (on mac) will now prevent the application context menu and allow the native browser menu to appear. There’s also a preference to disable the feature altogether.

Did you folks ever end up making a decision on this?

I’d love a “collapse all” button, and I suppose expand all would be useful every once in a while too :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Haha, for my case it is the opposite: “expand all” would be more important whenever I need to move an element using the Layout pane, since I have to first expand several nested levels both for the source and the destination.

Two sides of the same coin

Yes, we’re going to add the right-click menu to the Layout pane - that will allow us to offer expand/collapse actions. We feel this is the best way forward instead of adding more UI elements that are always visible.

Update: Right click now supported on the Layout screen. There are new expand/collapse actions in the vertical view.
