Feature Request: Apply something like Element defaults to Post types

Something similar is probably on the way in the next version.

It would mean a lot if the Template manager had an option to assign a saved template to a particular post type, just like a preset can be assigned to a particular element as default.

Content editor can already be activated for post types, but there is that extra step to manually load templates into them.

Thanks!

Hi Misho,

I don’t think we’ll have a way to have a default when you start a new post of a given type. It will always be a fresh slate. However, the Layout Builder will let you design a layout using the same builder experience you’re used to and assign that to a particular post type. That way they can all follow a specific design. For example, you could create a layout with a headline and image which are linked to the post title and featured image respectively via dynamic content. Then you can define a content area that will be the only thing editable when editing that post in the Content Builder. More to come on this, but the Layout Builder will be the answer for many concerns regarding building with custom post types.

Doesn’t Divi allow you to pick a template from a library of templates when you create a new page? That’s a step up from being able to define one default template per post type (which is in itself a great option to have).

Hey @misho and @JvP been a while! Hope you’re well. I checked out what you said about Divi and think that’s a really cool pattern. Having a “use template” / “clone existing” / “start from scratch” option could be super handy in the content builder since you don’t have the opportunity like headers/footers to start with a template.

PS: Just following up on some older threads as we get closer to the next beta. We’re about to start testing it all internally. Keep an eye out a bit later in the month
