Edit with Cornerstone option leads to blank home page (only header/footer visible)

I recently updated to the latest versions of X Theme and Cornerstone, and suddenly my home page content is no longer visible using the Cornerstone editor. I’ve deactivated all plugins and that did not have an impact. How can I restore Cornerstone functionality?

Hi Nabeel,

The issue persists after clearing the website cache and performing the standard troubleshooting protocols. I updated the secure note with the website and home page details where you can replicate the blank cornerstone edit page (sans header/footer which are visible). Please let me know what we can do to restore cornerstone editing functionality.

EDIT: I noticed that WordPress Posts no longer have the Cornerstone edit option available. I included a post link in my secure note as well.

Hi Ben,

I went to your website and followed the steps below:

  • Re-installed Cornerstone.
  • Duplicated the Homepage and tested the Cornerstone.

There was no change, I went to X > Settings and enabled the Cornerstone for posts using Permissions section. For more information:

It seems that there was a problem in the process of update that caused an issue with the homepage. Please kindly contact your hosting service provider and ask them to bring back a backup of your website with the older version.

Then please check to see if the page is working ok. After that please try the manual installation process to make sure everything works ok.

Hi Christopher,

I had tried restoring a backup prior to opening this ticket and was not successful. The previous versions of X Theme and Cornerstone produced the same problem.

Is there a method of building a Cornerstone page using the shortcode data? I understand the data is serialized when stored on the MySQL database, but I was hoping there is some manual method of restoring or rebuilding a page using the shortcode structure. If not, would it be helpful if I provided direct access to the WordPress database?

Hi Ben,

Unfortunately, it is impossible. If it was that way even before the update, then it might be the case that there was an edit outside of Cornerstone that causes the problem.

There is no way to use Shortcodes or database access to be able to bring back the problem unless you go back to a time from your backups that the problem occurred (most probably because of the editing of the page outside Cornerstone.)

Other than that I’m afraid you will need to recreate the page using Cornerstone.

Thanks for that explanation. As long as the Cornerstone shortcodes remain intact, the front-end page will not be impacted by making edits outside of Cornerstone, is that correct? In other words, will the page lose any of the Cornerstone dependencies, such as flippable cards, tabbed content areas, smooth scrolling, etc.?

And separately, are you able to explain why Cornerstone pages cannot be edited outside of Cornerstone? I have not experienced this problem with similar page builders such as WP Bakery and it would be helpful to have a better understanding of this limitation and available workarounds/restoration techniques.

Hi Ben,

Sorry that you’re having that issue, the actual page data contains far more information than is needed for the content area, so we store it in a post meta field. This makes saving only work one way.

Have you try the Wordpress revision feature? I have seen cases like this that were solved by that, they just restore it to the date before the editing outside of Cornerstone happens.

If that’s not going to work in your case, you need to rebuild the page in Cornerstone, one way you can do this is build the page in a draft page, then after completing rebuilding it on Cornerstone, save it as a template and load that to the actual page.

No, it should not. Unless you accidentally broke the shortcodes (another reason why editing outside cornerstone is a no no).
