The Cornerstone site (https://theme.co/cornerstone/) has a nice fade in overlay (original image / reveal image) as you scroll down the page. The question is… How did they accomplish this? And hopefully they used Cornerstone, as we’d like to use this feature in one of our site build-outs.

Unfortunely that is not a feature available on the builder out of the box.
That was done using Javascript, you could achieve some similar effect using the fade effect with the column inside a row background.
