Copy and paste of sections and elements between sites

I have been attempting to use the copy and paste functions between sites and for some reason it is not working.

For context I have tried this inside of a multisite network between subsites. I can copy but upon pasting it doesn’t work.

I tried it using two different sites there I can copy but no paste the section to the other site.

I am not able to copy and paste from one site to another. Only within the site.

Any insight what might be happening would be great.

UPDATE: I went back to look at the original request. I found that this appears to be another issue the the personify sites.

I have used the Personify sites twice in the past. When doing so it rendered the ability to copy sections and move them between sites without pulling in everything, not just a section. Which creates a giant mess.

And now this appears to be another issue. Because I can copy outside sections via copy and paste into the Personify instance. But I am not able to do it the other way around. I cannot copy from the personify setup to the other site. Even it it is a Personify instance.

Hey @klevur,

Thanks for writing in!

Please be advised that the Copy and Paste only applies within the Cornerstone builder. You cannot copy and paste across sites.

Copy and paste is possible in the page, in another page, or another layout as long as it is within the same site:

Copy and paste is NOT possible from site A to site B:

Across different sites, you will have to use the Template Manager to import/export the template. Check out the Template Manager documentation here: https://theme.co/docs/template-manager

If you have Site Drive, it would be easy to have the templates across the site. Check out how you can use it on your sites with these videos

Best Regards.

I understand and I can see what happened and why “I thought it was working”. So thank you for that.

As to your other point about The Template Manager and Site Drive I have already tried that.

That will not work with the Personify site details. For some reason when you use a Personify layout you cannot just copy a section or page. When you do that and save 1 section or one page, and you import that into the target site it will pull the ENTIRE source site. All pages, all sections, all headers, footers, etc. And when doing so it breaks the source site.

I only want a section or two from the one site to pull over to the target site but am not able to without having to manually rebuild the entire page from scratch.

Thanks for the assistance.

Hey @klevur,

Please try duplicating the element and modifying it to stand alone. Then, you can save it as a template so it’s separate from Personify.

That doesn’t work. It pulls the complete list of all of the pages and all of the media items when selecting 1 duplicated section over.

When extracting the .tco I can see there are 60 files. With 24 being .json files which corresponds to each page, footer, header, etc.

Is there a way to identify which page the .json file belongs to, remove the rest, rename back to a .tco file and import?

Hey @klevur,

Instead of duplicating try Copy and Pasting. That means you open the Component and open a regular page where you’ll paste the elements. You just copy the elements. The purpose of it is to copy the styles. You will have to remove the component and content setup in the copied elements. This way, it’s separate from the Personify templates. This is the “modification” part of what I said previously.

I tried that as well. It doesn’t work. What I don’t understand is why when using the export and import functions that it creates an entire site wide file?

When you open the package from the export it builds an entire site export every time. It doesn’t matter if you are exporting a single section or a full page.

Hey @klevur,

Please provide a video recording how you’re doing things so we can see where the problem lies. You can use video recording tools like Loom then give us a link to the video.

Thanks.

I will do that. And I am not sure if this is still happening with the Personify setup, but using Personify completely breaks the entire ability to use the templates.

I have tried it in every way. I had used Personify a while back on a project and built a custom hero and a few more sections. And I wanted to reuse that in another projects. Normally, just save as a template and import. Done.

With this, it doesn’t matter how you do it, whether it is a page, or just one section of a page, when you save as a template, export and import it brings over the entire site. All the media item, all pages, headers, footers, theme options, which wreaks havoc on the new site.

I was able to import everything and then had to go back and manually delete all of the Personify stuff that came over. Super tedious.

I did this for two sections that I built that did not even leverage the Personify setup. I brought that over into a clean custom site that had zero to do with Personify and now it is wrecked as well. When I try to save a section template from a on Personify install the entire site is contained in the export file.

I will send you what I have on my end but it might be worth hitting one of your Personify installs and see if you can replicate the issue.

Unrelated feedback on Personify: I was really excited to try it when it came out. It was super clean and organized. But using it makes things considerably more difficult. A novice user or client will never figure out how to manage the site. While I am sure the design is optimal, the math formulas in the fields for sizes of fonts, etc is confusing even for a reasonably experienced developer. Most of that can be controlled with the UI using things like em, rem, or px which most people don’t understand what that is.

No one who handles the tier 1 or tier 2 support can help without taking up a lot of time to find things.

I really like the Atomic framework but I find it not very practical for use. Maybe at the enterprise level but the SMB sector it is not useful.

I find that using Cornerstone in its normal raw state creates the most simple and easy to use (once you understand it - and developers stop putting everything in the Global CSS or JS box) tool available. It’s complex because there are so many options but with even a reasonable amount of training on the UI it makes customer support, and even direct client use efficient.

Best tool and framework on the market. I’ve used them all and have even tried leaving for Elementor twice, because of the adoption from others.

Leaving X Pro for Elementor is like stepping out of a Lamborghini and into a 1987 Toyota Corolla with manual seats and windows.

Hey @klevur,

Thank you for your feedback. I’ve tested Personify previously and it takes some work to undo its settings to make the template “separate”. It’s easier to replicate the design manually if you wish to “templetize” individual parts.
