Continuation: How to update bundled Revolition Slider impeding PHP code update to 7.4

Hi,
this topic is a continuation of this one, which has been closed:

As mentionned there:
our escape room is running this website built with the X Theme and Revolution slider bundled with it.
https://www.make-a-break.de/

Our site is still using an old PHP version, and we are getting security alerts from Wordpress that we should update to 7.4 (recommended). So the ultimate goal is to update the PHP version.

Now as described, there is an old version of the Revolution slider plugin which would likely not work on PHP 7.4

But Slider Revolution is an old version and it is not possible to update beyond 4.6.

Now I followed the steps advised by Prakash_s and deleted the old Slider Revolution plugin. But, I cannot install the new one as indicated:
It seems I do not have that window maybe because our site still running X 2.5.1. how to update to X 7 or above?

I only have these options:

(Sorry it took me so long to reply but I ran into difficulties setting up a staging site, unfortuntaly, not possible because our webhosting service Webfaction is being migrated to Tso in the next few months)

Hello Zoltan,

Thanks for writing in! Please update your X theme to version 8.0.5 already. You will have to update the X theme manually. Please see this documentation:

By the way, Please deactivate and delete X Shortcodes plugin. Please take note that X shortcodes plugin and its functionality has been consolidated into Cornerstone which you can install by going to X > Validation > Extensions.

Once you have updated the X theme, you should be able to update the bundled plugins too.

Kindly let us know how it goes.

Hello @ruenel,

Thanks, this did the trick. I was able to update Revolution slider in the end.
Now before I continue with the original issue, updating the PHP code, something else emerged:

The update of the Revolution slider plugin seems to have broken our video slider.
https://www.make-a-break.de/
The video slider now spins around like crazy.

Do you offer support for the extensions that are included in X theme? I imagine if I approach Revolution Slider with this, they will reject saying I did not buy the plugin from them?

Thanks!

Hey There,

I would recommend updating the php version and see if that resolves the issue. Additionally there is a Revolution Slider update in the pipeline that will be pushed over the weekend which could address this. Once those two things are updated and the issue persists please reach out so we can take a deeper look.

Hello,

So I proceeded and completed the PHP update procedure. It now runs on 7.4.12, at last! It does seem to work without any problems, except that I had to delete the Sticky Side Buttons plugin which did not support 7.4.

Unfortuntaly, the spinning revolution slider issue still remains. Maybe some functionality is new in revolution slider and our old slider content lacks some parameters? Can you get back to me once the Revolution Slider update is finished? Thanks!

Hello @BreakMaker,

It seems that you are using the X theme version 8.0.4 and Cornerstone version 5.0.4, I would suggest you update the X theme to the latest point version that is 8.0.6, Cornerstone version 5.0.6 and check if that issue still exists or not.
I would suggest you follow the below steps while updating to the latest version of the theme.

  1. Delete the Cornerstone
  2. Update the X theme to the latest version on automatic updates
  3. After the X theme is updated, use the link in the dashboard to automatically install the Cornerstone. It will be at the latest version

I would also suggest you troubleshot a few common issues on this.

1.Plugin Conflict
2.Theme Update related issue
3.Child Theme Related issue
4.CSS/JS Customization

If you discover that an issue is coming from a custom code or 3rd party plugin, kindly consult with a developer or contact the plugin author. Please note that we do not provide support for custom codes and 3rd party plugins.

If none of the above helps and you are still getting the issue, please provide login credentials for your site in a secure note to examine it further, including:

– WordPress Site URL & Login URL
– WordPress Admin username/password

Thanks

Hi there!

I have completed the tests 1-4 and could not solve the issue that the revolution slider keeps spinning:

Specifically: I deleted Cornerstone, auto-updated X theme to the latest version, reinstalled Cornerstone and checked if the problem had gone away, but it did not.
Then I disabled all plugins but Cornerstone and Revolution slider, and no plugin appeared to cause this issue.
Then, I checked and realised that there had been no child themes set up 7 years ago by the developer who created our website. But there seems to be no customization apart from what can be done from the interface under Customization
Then I checked if any CSS or JS code is added. The little CSS code (mostly there for disabling the slider on smaller mobile devices and styling headers), has no effect on the problem, when deleted.

I will go ahead and send you the login credentials in a separate secure node.

Thanks and kind regards.

Hey @BreakMaker,

You have enabled layer looping or Slider Revolution enabled that after update?

Setting it off fixed the issue.

Hope that helps.

Hi Christian,
Many thanks, this is awesome!
No, I did not enable layer looping, all I did was just importing our rev slider content back again (as when I deleted slider revolution, it deleted the content as well). So it seems Slider Revolution enabled it after the update.

Many thanks again, happy holidays!

You’re most welcome @BreakMaker! Glad to hear this is working for you now.
