I’ve just installed x theme onto my Wordpress site but when I try to install the child theme it doesn’t seem to recognise that there is a parent theme there

Do you have the parent theme already installed? If not, please make sure you have correctly installed the parent theme. You can download the theme from your dashboard.
Then make sure to download the correct child theme from here.
