Can't Change Homepage CSS in Cornerstone

Hi Xters…

Just updated X-Theme and Cornerstone from the previous versions and am having a strange issue… When I modify the CSS on my Homepage (ONLY) it shows the change in Cornerstone and seems to save, but the homepage itself in a browser does not change after saving and the CSS reverts to its original form on reopening the homepage in Cornerstone.

So basically, I can’t make a permanent changes to the CSS on my home page. This doesn’t seem to be an issue on any of the other pages, the posts, or the global CSS in options for my website.

I’ve also never had this problem before the very recent updates.

BTW - I’ve cleared all caches in the browser and no caching plugin is activated in WordPress… have also tried changing CSS on the Homepage repeatedly and it still always fails to update the website in browsers and restores the deleted code (and/or eliminates the added code) when re-entering the Homepage in Cornerstone.

Hello There,

Thanks for writing in! I have investigated the issue and the css or any other change were not saved. This is the reason why those changes were not displayed in the front end. I wanted to investigate further. Regretfully the ftp details is not working for us. We recommend that you increase the following:

- PHP memory limit to at least 256MB
- PHP Max Upload Size >= 64MB
- PHP Max Post Size >= 32MB
- PHP Max Script Execute Time >= 300s

Hope this helps. Please let us know how it goes.

Hi @RueNel,

I have the same exact error. How and where can I increase those?

Thank you.

Hi All…

Made the PHP changes and no go…any ideas?

Hey @ariz90,

To increase those PHP settings, please check out this link:

Hope this helps.

Hello @ajonesx,

I can confirm that everything in already increased. I noticed that you are using two versions behind. Please update to X 6.0.4. And after the update, please clear the site cache, plugin cache and your browser first before testing your site again.

Please let us know how it goes.

Hi All,

Strange report… the problem seems to be Yoast SEO. I started testing my plugins and when I deactivated Yoast all the issues disappeared with several more tests getting the same result.

The issues began right after I upgraded both X (to 6.0.2) and Cornerstone a few days ago… and the bump to 6.0.4 today didn’t help either.

I said the problem of not being able to change the CSS only applied to my main homepage (though I was still able to make changes in Cornerstone that saved.) However, one other page that was previously cloned from the main homepage was also affected (Communities >> Venice Beach Guide.)

I’m happy that things are working now, but am concerned about this seeming problem with using Yoast SEO. It also seems strange that only the homepage (and homepage clone) were affected.

A side thought: Could I have accidentally created two ‘Homepages’… and could the cloned page be what’s confusing Yoast?

Note: Just tried moving the ‘cloned’ page to the trash and no change in behavior… still can’t make changes to CSS on homepage if Yoast is activated. Also got a ‘Cashing/Aggressive Plugin’ warning in one instance of trying to open the homepage in Cornerstone while Yoast was active.

Update: In the process of renaming and organizing my page permalinks and found this url on the child of my homepage…

Notice the ‘home-2’ identifier on my current homepage (that was duplicated from an earlier original version… maybe considered ‘home-1’ or just plain ‘home’ which is now in the trash along with the cloned Venice page mentioned previously.)

Here’s the permalink for the ‘home-2’ homepage currently in use.

Was wondering again if this type issue might be what’s messing with Yoast.

Also, is there a way to change my current homepage (home-2) to just show as ‘home’ in the child urls?

Thanks

Hi there,

That is strange I never heard or Yoast causing such issues with the URLs and Cornerstone. Yoast is not a caching plugin to interfere with the already minified assets of the builder. Honestly not sure about this case.

For the home-2 you can simply go to the homepage and change the permalink of the homepage from home-2 to home. Then all child pages will follow the changes.

I strongly suggest that you save the permalinks one more time by going to Settings > Permalinks.

One way around the problem you are experiencing is that you go to the homepage and add a class to the body option of the page such as homepage:

Then move your CSS code from that page to X > Theme Options > CSS. You will need to change the CSS code and add .homepage at the begininning of all CSS codes.

That way the code will be available on the whole site but will be effective only for the homepage.

Thank you.

Hi All,

I sorted out the homepage identification issues by just republishing and modifying the original homepage… however, this was never the main issue and I only mentioned it in the first place because it was possibly related to the issue of not being able to save CSS changes on my homepage and one other page (it was not related.)

After extensive testing (i.e. systematically eliminating both CSS and X-theme elements from a copy of the homepage which was also unable to register CSS changes) it is crystal clear that Yoast was causing the issue of blocking CSS changes on a specific page IF AND ONLY IF the Classic Recent Posts element was installed on that page. It’s also worth noting that I disabled the couple of lines of global CSS in options that targeted the recent posts before reaching the conclusion that the Classic Recent Posts element itself is the source of the problem.

As I previously said… this issue only first appeared after very recent updates to X, Cornerstone, & Yoast SEO.

Any chance this conflict is going to be fixed on your end… or will I need to get a 3rd party recent posts widget?

Also, here’s the link to another post that talks about issues between Yoast SEO and the Recent Posts element.

Thanks

Hey @ajonesx,

I have replicated the issue in my test site. The CSS doesn’t get saved if there is a Recent Post element in a page and when Yoast SEO is active. Regretfully, there’s currently no solution for this. Please stay tuned for updates.

Thanks.

Hi All,

A lot of your users are probably struggling with this bug right now… I know that it cost me several days of work on my website and at least a full day of trouble-shooting to figure it out,

Considering how important the ‘Recent Posts’ element is to many of your users (particularly Wordpress users like myself) and how popular and the Yoast SEO plugin is I’d think that resolving this would be a high priority for your programmers.

This has apparently been a known issue for quite some time:

… and its easy to find a number of more recently reported instances of problems with Yoast that seem similar to this bug. Please let me know if there’s any expectation that the issue will be fixed in the near future.

Thanks

Thank you for pointing out the threads. Regretfully, we could not provide an ETA but I’ll add them to the already submitted bug report. Please stay tuned for updates.

We’re sorry for the inconvenience.

Same problem here (also with yoast and latest news) - not very funny to spend half a day experimenting with css and not beeing successful because everything beeing deleted again and again. Problems like this, that can be reproduced and do affect many customers should be solved with highest priority. Hope there will be a fix soon.

Hi there,
