Beta 3: UX thoughts

Hi,

im a little bit late to the party i guess, but i’d like to share some of my thoughts on the beta:

  1. I really like the idea of having those buttons in the upper left (copy, delete, …), but feel like undo & redo buttons should also be up there. I had to look for them at first

  1. The “Go up One Level”-button feels a little bit out of place being this close to the copy- and delete-button. Maybe it should be in front of the currently selected item instead? Could look like this:

  1. When I was looking at the new interface, I noticed that the Inspector icon might be confused with a search icon by new users. Maybe the icon needs a check mark or something similar to not be confused with a search function. I know us hardcore users are used to it, but new users might not be.

Altogether i’m happy with how the new interface turned out and i’m really exited for the next release!

Thanks for writing in, @sparko!

  1. Undo / redo are global actions and are not tied to any specific Element. It tracks actions such as moving, copying, and deleting Elements, all of which you can do on Elements you do not have currently inspected. These will remain in the toolbar because of this.
  2. While I like the idea potentially of placing the “up one level” action to the side of the headline, it’s current placement is done out of a desire to keep the layout from shifting in the Workspace as you move up to the top level. With it’s current placement first inline with the actions, you can quickly multi-click to keep moving up to the top, and when at the top, it simply disappears and keeps you from clicking anything else. Placement to the side of the title like this would mean at the top level the title shifts back over, which is undesirable.
  3. The inspector icon has been a magnifying glass since Cornerstone has been out.We have no plans to change it at this time.

Thanks for your kind words and glad you’re enjoying it overall!

  1. You’re right, I didn’t consider the relation between elements and the buttons. I just think the bottom right corner might not be the best place for them. Guess im just used to having undo buttons closer to the sidebar (like in Pro 5.x) and toolbars at the top like in other programs.
How about if there was an option to choose whether the toolbar sits at the top or bottom of the workspace? Like, right below the tabs?

  1. Valid point. Layout shift is never a good thing. Still not sure about the current placement and look of the icon.

  2. I’m fine with that since im used to it

Thanks for sharing! I’ve noted some things down here as we always do. I cannot guarantee anything will be updated or changed as at this point the primary focus is to ensure all major and potential breaking changes are accounted for to get to a stable release.

Cheers!
