Beta 2: Notes on using templates

Hi!

The template library is super-neat! Here are some of my thoughts. :slight_smile:

I saved a section as a template and named it. Then I did the same with a button. They both appear while managing the library, but they are not listed among templates in the library. There is a “Sections” section, but it remains empty. The only things that do get listed are entire saved pages.

I love the fact that screenshots are getting generated! There is some room for improvement here. For example, this is a button that I saved:

It would be great if we could get a preview of the entire element that is being saved.

  1. In the coming beta that isn’t out yet, we are re-introducing the “Section Template” mechanic from the Outline pane where you can select a number of sections and save these as a “Section Template” that can be applied where you need. So “Section Templates” are generated from the Outline Pane while “Document Templates” (e.g. the WHOLE page you’re working on or the WHOLE header you’re working on) are saved from the Templates Workspace. Each of these templates are added to your content from the Templates Workspace. The main difference between the two is that the Document Templates are document specific…so you will only see Headers up top in your Header builder, and you can apply them to your document. “Section Templates” show up in all builders as these might be little “blocks” of content you want to use anywhere. So once that mechanic is back in, you’ll be able to save true “Section” templates from the Outline pane, but as of now it’s not fully in at the moment.
  2. Yes, we are aware there is some room for improvement here. It isn’t our top priority at the moment with other things going on, but we hear you on this.

I’d like to loop back to this topic, since the current version is RC1.

When I manage a section and save it as a template, I still can see it while managing templates.

But for the life of me, I cannot figure out how to apply those templates. The “Sections” section on the Templates tab remains empty.

Am I missing something, or this is still not implemented? :slight_smile:

So you can see the template in the template manager modal, but not in the template tab with the “sections” area? You should definitely see it there if you created a section template. What was the top level element type (ie div, section)? Were you editing a page or something else like a footer? We do have a right click action on the elements tab that allows you copy then apply templates if that helps.
