Beta 2 | Locking workspace

I think this has been mentioned before in the Beta 1 discussions but I’d say that roughly 80% of the time when I go to click on one of the workspace navs (Outline, Inspector, etc) I end up pulling the workspace pane away from it’s sticky location.

Additionally, in that same vein, when trying to close one of the free standing panes, it takes several clicks to get it to actually close.

If dislocating could be less responsive and closing more responsive, we’d be in a good place. Easier said than done I’m sure

Very much agree with this.

Because it’s so easy to rearrange the builder bars, I think there are going to be a lot of regular folks reporting the UI is “broken” (because they accidentally click-dragged a bar).

It reminds me a lot of the Dock on macOS. People used to accidentally drag icons out of their docks all the time – thinking they “deleted an app” and couldn’t get it back. This could easily happen if they accidentally click-dragged an app icon a few pixels to the side while trying to simply click.

Apple finally addressed this a couple years ago by doing a couple little things. First, users now have to drag an App icon ~200 pixels away away from the dock. And secondly, they must also hold the drag for close to a second. This effectively eliminates most accidental quick drags. So, I think it might be a good idea to make it slightly “harder” to quickly move the bars.

I personally expected to need to enter a “rearrange the builder” mode within the UI, and was surprised it was so easy to move them.

Thanks @DoncoMarketing and @devinelston,

We’ve still not made any adjustments on the unsnapping interaction but do plan on changing the sensitivity. I’d like to see how much that helps before adding more controls to facilitate locking/unlocking.

Sounds good.

Got these adjustments in. It’s much more forgiving now. The thresholds can be tuned, so curious to hear how things feel once we get the next patch out.
