Beta 1 - Recent Posts

Hi, Is it possible to create a recent posts (not classic recent posts) using the new tools to pick up the latest 3 posts of a particular category, and also exclude the current post?

It would be really helpful to have a new recent posts element please

Good question, need it too.

Not yet, but yes it will be in this release once we flag over all the archive builder code.

In this release we built what behind the scenes we’re calling prefab elements, which are just normal elements with Dynamic Content preconfigured so you can drag in ā€œThe Titleā€ and see it output without having to set that up.

The new post elements will work in a similar fashion. They will be based on existing elements but have multiple parts and automatically work with a given Query. This way you will be able to deconstruct the individual parts of the new ā€œRecent Postsā€ equivalent.

So you can drag in ā€œPostsā€ and adjust it to a particular query (category, post type, etc.) but once it’s in you could individually style things like the thumbnail and title as if they were Headline and Image elements. The style will automatically repeat for each post.

That sounds perfect, just out of curiousity, do you have a rough idea of timespan to introducing the archive builder? Totally understand that is a ā€˜how long is a piece of string’ question but ballpark would be nice

Not sure on an ETA just yet but we’ll probably push another beta to patch up a bunch of these smaller issues, then do one more phase after that including all the archive builder stuff.

YES! Good to hear that this is almost on its way, it will make life a lot easier not having to use essential grid all the time for recent posts.

We’re really excited about it! We’ve been making so many changes based on feedback that unfortunately we won’t be getting the archive mode out until next week, but I’m really looking forward to your feedback after trying it out.

Rather than creating a new thread since I found this in search and seems related as testing just thought I would check if this ability to exclude current post would become an option. I have been testing and I know if you edit an individual post you can then go exclude from the loop provider the specific post and find that post and it will exclude it but would be great if there was an option similar to the tick box that says include sticky posts. But a tick box that is exclude current post.

Hey, @quentosity! Thanks for writing in…if I’m understanding you correct, you’re saying you’d like to have an option inside of each post’s meta options that you could flag something to not be included in main queries, is that correct? If that’s the case, I’m not sure at the moment if I can see much of a use case for this due to the fact that I can’t think of times where I’d have something in my blog that I wouldn’t want to show up in a recent post query, but perhaps if you could elaborate a little more or give some examples of when that might be useful, that might help. At this time I don’t see it being a huge priority due to the fact that users can exclude posts via the Looper Provider as you mentioned, but would certainly love to hear any more thoughts you might have.

Thanks!

I haven’t tried this with the current tools yet, but I’ve been wondering about this myself.

For me, the use case is creating a row of ā€œother blog postsā€ at the end of a single post layout. In that row of posts, I wouldn’t want the ā€œcurrentā€ post to be recommended.

Sorry might not of explained it well. So currently above is a screenshot of me editing a portfolio page, at the bottom I have a row that has a looper as you can see that pulls other portfolios and I have told it to not include this portfolio by finding it and selecting it. More ideally I could setup this rows as a footer that applies to all portfolios and tell it to exclude the current post. Instead of having this row as part of the Portfolio and selecting the specific post. A lot of sites use this sort of function on blogs with plugins to show recent posts and there is often an option to exclude current post.

Hopefully that make better sense.

@devinelston and @quentosity, thanks for that! So it sounds like primarily, you’d like to be able to do something like, ā€œHey, give me a bunch of related items but exclude this item I’m currently onā€¦ā€ that makes sense. I’m not sure that will be getting right in with this upcoming release, but I’ll share the idea with Alex to see about getting something like that in! I can totally see how that would be useful now that I’m understanding…thanks!
