Beta 1 - moveable panels feedback

Hi all,

just a little feedback on the moveable panels… already I have accidentally dragged the panels numerous times. as part of a normal workflow I could imagine moving panels at the beginning of a project or rarely to move panels out of the way… but for the most part it would be excellent if the panels could be locked into place. maybe a quick lock icon in the narrow left panel?

Hi Scot!

Does it feel like it happens more often with the Bar or Workspace, or is it about the same? What I’m noticing at the moment is that sometimes it registers a simple click as a “drag intent” if you click pretty fast while the app is still loading up behind the scenes.

We don’t want to add any more icons to the bar at this point, but I could see us potentially adding a preference to lock them. I’d like to see if we can tighten up the drag/drop experience first. For example, this isn’t something that frequently happens with browser tabs. Perhaps we need to introduce a bigger deadzone requiring a somewhat larger mouse drag before it activates.

Hi Alex,

Good to be bashing this stuff out again…

it is definitely the workspace, I think mainly because the bar needs to hit another screen edge before it moves from its location, while the workspace can also float. personally, I don’t like the float option for the workspace. I don’t like it for desktop programs like Photoshop, and I think it makes for a messy experience in Pro.

I personally, prefer the option to tag the workspace to a screen edge

I also like the idea of locking the positions in the preferences, especially important when it comes to client use (try explaining to a client on the phone that the button they want is in the top left of the screen, only they have moved it by accident… it has the potential to be worse than parental IT support!)

Maybe a little of both… a lock in preferences, and a slower pick up for moving the workspace?

Thanks! Makes sense. Thinking through it a bit more and regretfully if we did a lock preference, it would have to lock them into the default configuration (both bar and workspace left). At least with how it’s architected right now. When you move something, that change is stored in your browsers local storage. With the code editors for example, it remembers the last screen location for you. The last used snapped edges are remembered that way as well.

Hey guys,

I’m with @scotbaston on this one. I didn’t really get what he was experiencing until today when I worked at a coffee shop and only used my 13inch laptop.

So when working on a bigger screen I can stick the panel to the side and still get a good size preview. But in order to get a good size preview on a 13inch MacBook, I needed to have the panels be floating which is where I experienced accidentally moving the panel when actually just clicking on the top buttons.

Here is a quite video of it happening.

This did happen quite often, it did get a bit frustrating when I was on a faster pace clicking it would do it more often. Especially using the trackpad, the top bar seems to be very sensitive to any movement.

I know that you guys aren’t very keen on adding any more icons to that bar but maybe when it’s not stuck to the edge, introduce a minimalised version with just showing the icons and with an icon specific to moving the panel.

Something like this possibly:

I see what you mean. One of the reasons we have the text in there is so it reminds you what builder you are currently working in. We don’t really have the space to add another icon.

I’ve still not had a chance to tune the timing there, but I will make it more delayed and less sensitive to clicks vs drags.

Update: Next patch will have a much less sensitive drag interaction.
