    Is it possible, that my problem is caused by PHP version (it is only 5.3.29)?

    Yes it is possible.

    Please request your hosting provider to update it to 5.6 that is the minimum required for this version of WordPress.

    So, most probably, the old version of PHP was the problem. I did not realize, that we use it. Hope everything will go smooth now. Thanks.
