Hello! I just downloaded the X theme yesterday with all of its plugins. I am a little confused though as to which one of the following tools I should use to create a portfolio with images that link to info pages with a gallery of each individual project. What is the difference between Essential Grid, The Grid, Envira Gallery and the X portfolio? Can I just use one? What are the limitations of each one? Thank you very much in advance for your answer!

    Hi There,

Essential Grid and The Grid, as the names say are grid plugins, they have similar functionalities but also have differences, please look the links below and reaserch a bit on the internet to see which one of them suits you better.

Envira is a gallaery plugin, you can see on the link below.

And X portfolio is the portfolio of X :D, it is quite flexible I believe based on your description it could be the best way to start.

Please have a look on the documentation below and choose one or a combination of them to achieve your goals.

    Hi There,

Your images are way bigger than necessary, reduce the size to the necessary size, you can install a Google Chrome Addons called Page Ruler it can be useful to measure things.

After you resize your images go to http://www.tinypng.com and optimize your images there, re-upload them after that, it will for sure load a lot faster.

    Hope it helps

    Hello There,

    Thanks for the updates!

1] It depends on what you wanted. If you do not like the predesigned portfolio page and the portfolio item page layout, it would be better that you have a different set up.

2] Yes you can. This example page is a just a basic page with a custom essential grid displaying items. You can always replicate this by creating a page and a grid. You must also add each of the items as a posts under a post format or a category to group the items. You can always edit each of the items using Cornerstone.

3] All the X theme Portfolio will be created as a custom post type named x-portfolio. You can link it to a page by adding a link to the page as the Project Link in the Portfolio item settings (http://prntscr.com/bnqklb) when you edit the portfolio item.

To know more how you can create your portfolio page with X Portfolio, please check out our knowledge base here:

    Dear Rue,

Thank you very much for your helpful answer!

I had another question. In one of my previous posts in this thread I asked about my slider loads so slow (http://website2016.studiohillier.com/china-mobile/) and Joao said that the images are too big and I will need to resize them. Currently, they are at 1410 px by 1058 px. I read in a forum that the ideal size for slider inages is 1170 px by 500 px.

My question is: should I make all my slider images this size – 1410 px by 1058 px?

    Thank you again!

    Hi There,

Your images on http://website2016.studiohillier.com/china-mobile/ are around 600 x 453 (please see img attached)

You should upload images with similar size. Also before uploading you can use http://www.tinypng.com to reduce the data size of your image in order to improve performance.

    Hope that helps

    Hi, Joao!

I did that – I put my images to be around 600 x 453 and I used Tinypng to make them almost 3 times smaller but it still takes lots of time to load.

I want my first image to be there when the page loads.
Do you think I should change all images on entire site before that happens? I run a GTMetrix report and I got an F on the following – Defer Parsing of JavaScript.

Please, I need to figure it out!

    Thank you!

    Hi there,

Thanks for writing back. Your provided URL seems loading fine and it’s fast enough. You can see the test here to check which image still loading relatively slow – https://tools.pingdom.com/#!/Fn5Hd/http://website2016.studiohillier.com/china-mobile/

I can see 3 images still could be optimized a bit more with http://www.tinypng.com

    Cheers!
