Yoast and Cornerstone access

Hi, folx!

I just installed Yoast SEO today and have discovered that the plugin can’t access the content i’ve entered into Cornerstone.

I read through some of your past tickets. It sounds like fixing this access issue was a priority in 2018 and 2019 and that it was activated in 2020. I can’t see anything more recent on this topic.

Yoast tells me that this is a theme/visual editor issue. Is this true? They recommended that “my developers” look at this article: https://developer.yoast.com/customization/yoast-seo/adding-custom-data-analysis/.

They recommended i create a new page in WordPress (not Cornerstone) and copy & paste all of my data into it, page by page, so it can check for readability, etc. This is doable but it’s also a super clunky workaround, especially because i’m using so many accordions.

Any guidance on a better workaround?

Hi Shannon,

Unfortunately, there is no alternative workaround on this right now. But our development team is working on this and will fix it in an upcoming release.

Thanks

Hi Shannon -

I don’t work for ThemeCo or Yoast. The Flesch Read Ease (FRE) score has been around a long time since the 40s.

This option would be my second choice. I’ll list my first choice next. There are many web resources that can give you an Flesch-Kinkaid (F-K) score without you needing to create a new page in Wordpress. All you would need to do is view the page to score in one tab and open any site that can produce an FRE or F-K score in another and just copy paste the page’s content into the form.

This is my first choice. It has the added benefit of creating a backup of all your written content. You can use Word to produce those results too. Write future content or copy old content into Word. Then in the “Review” tab click “Spelling and Grammar” on the far left. If you don’t see the readability statistics in the dialog box they aren’t turned on. Go to “File”, “Options”, “Proofing” then check “Show readability statistics”. Personally, I think it’s a good idea to write your content out in something like Word first.

Hope that helps with giving you some options.

Best.

Hey Tim,

We appreciate your time and effort when sharing your thoughts. @ShannonWyss, please see the advise from Tim.

Cheers!

Thanks so much, @t1mduma5 and @marc_a.

I did originally write out all my content in Word but have continued to refine it now that it’s in Cornerstone and some of it’s been substantially improved. I don’t currently have access to Word. I have a Mac “at home” and, for the first time, decided not to feed the Microsoft beast when i got my new laptop a couple years ago.

However, once i have a new job, i should have access to Word again, which will allow me to look into your workaround. (The Mac version of Word, Pages, doesn’t have the readability functionality.)

In the interim, i’ll look into online F-K/FRE analyzers. And i’ll keep an eye out on future Cornerstone releases for better integration with this part of Yoast.

Thanks again. And wishing you both a great weekend.

You are most welcome, Shannon.

Hi @ShannonWyss,

I totally understand not wanting to feed the beast.

Here is one Flesch-Kinkaid calculator.

View the webpage copy content, paste into the calculator, press “calculate”.

If anyone wants it I can dig of my code for counting syllables (in English) and post it here. That’s the trickiest part, counting syllables.

Thanks so much, @t1mduma5, for the F-K calculator page. I’m going to look into that right away.

No reason to post any of your code for me since that’s well above my paygrade. But if anyone else wants it, jump in and request it!

We’re going to be updating how Yoast reads content in Pro 6.5. There’s some issues around how the shortcodes are rendered. Appreciate the article you sent me Shannon. Have a great day.
