This site was running fine; for some reason, X updated the theme automatically. CSS seems broken, menus are shot, and I can’t get into the customizer - I get an error message: " Fatal error: Call to undefined method Cornerstone_Common::get_app_route_url() in /home4/environx/public_html/2016/wp-content/themes/x/framework/functions/admin/customizer.php on line 36"

It seems that you have updated X theme to version 6.5.6 and yet Cornerstone is still using 1.3.0. Please do the following:
1.) Go to the Plugins section.
2.) Find Cornerstone plugin 1.3.0 and deactivate it.
3.) Delete the Cornerstone plugin.
4.) Go back to X > Validation and wait for a few seconds while Cornerstone is being installed automatically.
5.) If the automatic installation fails, you can get the latest Cornerstone 3.5.5 from the link in the secure note.
By the way, Please be advised that we have just released X 7.0.2 and Cornerstone 4.0.2. It is now available in automatic updates. You can now update to this latest version. This latest release contains fixes for several issues so be sure to check out the changelog (http://theme.co/changelog/).
After doing the updates, always remember to clear all caches (if you are using WP Rocket, WP SuperCache or W3 Total Cache) when updating so that the code from the latest release is always in use. This will help you to avoid any potential errors.

Thanks, that fixed it - but I didn’t update anything - the theme automatically updated, but didn’t update cornerstone. How can I stop the theme from updating automatically?

The theme or any plugin will not update automatically. You will need to go the Dashboard > Updates or in the plugins section and click the update link. Meanwhile, since you have X6.5.6, when you let the theme install the supported Cornerstone, it will install the latest supported version which is bundled within the theme itself. This is why as you removed Cornerstone 1.3.0 and went to X > Validation to install the bundled Cornerstone, it installs the 3.5.5 version.
Please be advised that we have release a newer version as well. Please head out to Dashboard > Updates and update both the X theme and Cornerstone.
Out dated WP, theme and plugins will create issues in your site. Most like, a conflict or incompatibility occurs in your site if one of the outdated version is present.
