WPML + Pro - Edit Default language in Pro and secondary language is over-written / corrupted

I’m using Pro with WPML to build a site in English as the default language and French as the secondary language.

I’ve been through the setup of WPML with Pro and managed to duplicate my Pro (Cornerstone) pages for the secondary language.

Now (in a nutshell), once the French version of the page has been created and customised with custom content, if I edit the English version of the page, it over-writes the title in the French version with the English title, which in turn affects my French navigation for each page I edit in the same way. I then have to go back and ‘quick edit’ the French version of the page, putting the Page Title and URL back to French, then (and this only happens sometimes), if I then try to view the French version of the page on the front-end, it’s corrupted.

To fix this, I edit the French version of the page again in Pro and save straight away (don’t need to change anything) and the issue is resolved.

Having worked on this site for the past fortnight, I was pretty sure it was possibly an issue with WPML (possibly the most complicated plugin ever created), but no - it seems to be a compatibility issue between X-Theme Pro and WPML .

I’ve checked the compatibility status of Pro and WPML and have the latest versions of everything.

It also looks like this is a bug stretching back a couple of years as I’ve found posts on the same subject from as far back as 2018.

Is this a known bug, is there a workaround and if not do you have a roadmap of when it should be fixed. This is a major stumbling block for me as I have Full lifetime licences for both Pro and WPML, and having made the initial investment, I’m disappointed if this falls into a ‘no date on a fix’ category.

Thanks for reaching out.
There might be a different reason for corrupted content, and one of the major reasons is editing the page using default or block editor. Please remember that the content added through the Cornerstone or Content Builder is not editable in the Block or Gutenberg editor, and vice-versa.

If that is not the case, please share your login credentials to investigate it further. I will report this to the issue tracker so this can be queued for further investigation by the development team, if the Pro and the compatibility is the reason behind the issue.
Please provide login credentials for your site in a secure note to examine it further, including:

– WordPress Site URL & Login URL
– WordPress Admin username/password

To create a secure note, click the key icon underneath any of your posts.

Thank you for your reply. My site is about to launch, so I’ll setup a staging version and will add details to a secure note in a moment.

Regarding the editor, I generally always install the Classic Editor, but found this to be a factor in the corruption of a previous attempt at getting everything to work smoothly between Pro and WPML. Eventually, I had to revert to an old backup and install WPML several times taking notes each time before I got it to a point where everything was stable.

I understand the difference between content added in Cornerstone / Pro and the Block / Gutenberg Editor and whilst I don’t currently have the Classic Editor installed, I have avoided ‘saving’ the page in the Gutenberg / Block editor. However, I’ll need to do that if I’m to setup Yoast and SEO so I may backup and try the classic editor again.

I know one thing for certain, my next multi-language site will be built from the ground up with Pro and ACF. Everything is duplicated anyway, so there’s nothing to be gained by using WPML and I would have far greater control over the content than i do with WPML, which seems to be able to update anything under its own schedule.

I followed the exact steps you described in your comment, but unfortunately, the issue does not come up. Can you please make a video of it so we can check and try to replicate the steps to re-generate the issue?

Thank you for showing us how to replicate the issue.

I’ve replicated the issue but only once so I’m not sure yet how the issue happens. I’ve tested the Our Promise page. The title remains in French even after several Content Builder edits.

Regretfully, you’d need to manually change the title for now as we’ll be monitoring this behavior in our test sites.

Regarding the shortcodes in the content area, that is currently a bug in the recent version. Just scroll down and you’ll see the Edit with Pro button.

If you’re using the Essential Grid, by the way, that button might disappear if you use the Classic Editor. If that is the case, you need to temporarily deactivate the Essential Grid.
