Our website using theme x is very slow. Changing the theme speeds up the loading times.

Is there any troubleshooting that can be done to see why this is happening? Is there a way to optimize the theme so it is not so heavy to load?

The page speed issues are mostly related to the content,image, scripts used in your site and not related to the theme. Still, I will suggest you take any empty page to check the result and add the content to the same page 1 by 1 and check the result again to understand what exactly causes your issue.
Please remember that page speed or website optimization is beyond the scope of theme support.
