New release of WordPress(5.8) says this about webp:
“What is in WordPress 5.8?
Adding support for WebP”
@Sedu noted below:
“If Wordpress introduces a way to do webp natively we will be able to support it.”
So… can we be hopeful that Pro will support them soon? We’ll have to work on Photoshop supporting the format to make a more seamless workflow. It would be great if Pro would convert jpg to webp natively or have a single trusted plugin partner to make that happen. Google page speed insights is just killing our Pro site speed ratings and we need all the help we can get.
Hi @Sedu,
I wanted to follow up on this after seeing the feature request come in. Regretfully this isn’t something we’ll be able to work out in the near future. We rely on the WordPress media library for referencing images and will be using their implementation of srcset
in one of our upcoming major releases. This means that WordPress will be responsibly for the src URLs. If Wordpress introduces a way to do webp natively we will be able to support it.
