Video player not auto-playing live YouTube streams

Hi. The autoplay function of the Video Player element is not working when the source is a live YouTube stream.

I routinely produce live webinars using a custom landing page designed in X. I use YouTube as the streamer and even though I have Autoplay enabled on the video player, it does not autoplay when it’s a LIVE STREAM. Autoplay does seem to work when it’s a recorded YouTube video, however. But I NEED it to autoplay live Youtube streaming as well. I am running X v8.3.2 and Cornerstone v5.3.2. Thanks.

Hi Kenny,

Thank you for writing in, the Video Player element is not supposed to be used with embedded video, it is should be used with a direct link (.mp4) videos.

Please use the Video element with the Embed type.

You can watch this 3 minutes tutorial on how to get the video embed code.
How to Embed Your YouTube Live Stream on the New YouTube Studio

Hope it helps,
Cheers,

Thank you, but I know how to embed. Here’s the issue. Please read carefully…

Scenario 1: I use the EMBED CODE provided by YouTube which includes the autoplay command. Result: The video loads but does not play automatically. The user must still press the play button in the middle of the screen.

Scenario 2: I use the DIRECT LINK instead of the embed code and place it in the Video element player tab. I set autoplay to on. Result: The video loads but does not play automatically, AND the play button in the middle of the screen does not work! The user must press the very small play button located to the left of the timeline at the bottom of the screen.

The other annoying thing is that this is an INTERMITTENT issue. Sometimes it autoplays, but most times it does not. I have tested this on multiple browsers. Is this a bug? Can you get a Youtube LIVE STREAM to autoplay?

Also, the link to the tutorial you sent is outdated. The location of the embed switch and code has changed. Thanks.

Hi Kenny,

In the first case Autoplay Policy Change can be the reason, you need to Muted the video, to start the video automatically or wait for user interaction and play videos on demand unmuted. But in the second case, I have added the Youtube URL directly to the Player option and it autoplay properly.

Thanks for understanding.

Thank you for the information. I did not know that Chrome was stopping autoplay from occuring when it’s not muted.

Hi Kenny,

You are most welcome.
