Video does not play sound

Hi,

On our homepage, there is a video that automatically begins playing. However, it begins on mute unless someone clicks the audio button in the control bar. Then, the audio should come on but it doesn’t although the video clearly has video: https://wordpress-100914-379772.cloudwaysapps.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/08/NCS-Doc-Main.mp4

Previously, this was working but now it isn’t

Could you help us figure out why this is happening? I’ve created a clone of our production site and included all of the credentials below in the secure note. Thank you very much in advance

Hi There,

Thank you for writing in, the video is set to mute.

Please turn that option off.

Hope it helps,
Cheers!

Hey Friech,

But the problem is that if I turn it to mute, then the audio will begin to play as soon as the page loads since the the video plays on page load. What we would like is to have it function as before where the video plays on page load on mute. Then, the user can click the audio button to turn the audio on

Hello There,

Regretfully there isn’t an option in the video where the video plays on page load on mute and then the user can click the audio button to turn the audio on. You can only have it mute or play the audio on page load.

Thank you for your understanding.

Hi RueNel,

Thanks for getting to us so quickly. Previously, before 1.2, this had worked as confirmed here: https://theme.co/apex/forum/t/video-player-autoplay-on-mute-until-otherwise/4277/2

Did something change?

And if so, is this something that we can expect to be supported again once more in future updates?

Hi,

Sorry For the confusion, but that is not possible.

This is something we can add to our list of feature requests. This way it can be taken into consideration for future development. All of these items are discussed with our team internally and prioritized based on the amount of interest a particular feature might receive. Thanks!

Thanks Paul,

But we’re still a bit confused, as in the past, this was working. To demonstrate, I’ve included below, a clone of the same website from a backup before updating to 1.2.x.

Notice how when you load the page, the video begins playing on mute. Then, when you click the sound button, the sound comes on. This was a backup from before updating to 1.2.x

Could you help us understand what we’re missing here? Because our observation is that this was working before but now it isn’t. We don’t mind using a different solution to load the video but before we make any decisions, we’d like to ensure that we understand what’s happening. Thanks again for your help.

Hi There,

Upon checking, It seems to be a bug related to recent updates. I have submitted this to our issue tracker for further review.

Thanks!

Thanks for confirming. Do you plan on updating us directly in this thread? Just wondering how we should proceed as we wait.

Hi there,

We can’t tell any ETA, but if this is related to compatibility issue from recent WP 4.9 then it could be longer since 4.9 introduce many issues as well.

Thanks!

Thanks Rad. I totally understand. Meanwhile, I looked into this deeper, trying to find a way to make it work temporarily. I found that there is hidden text under volume button “Use Up/Down Arrow keys to increase or decrease volume.” and you need to click it first to ‘activate’ volume button.

As I can see (and correct me if I’m wrong) it’s a new change in the theme’s minified JS.

However, I can’t work with it properly because:

  1. Origin file is minified
  2. It’s JS, which I’m admittedly not an expert of =)

At that moment I’m able to make the text visible and add a function to trigger the volume button, but I still can’t call the link function which activates volume button to make it work. Any ideas?

By the way, the two staging sites provided previously in this thread have been destroyed and I’m working off a different site.

Hi there,

Thanks for sharing more information about the issue and we’ll check that as well. Unfortunately, I can’t provide any workaround since it may be related to javascript which is minified, and I can’t confirm it yet. Please stay tuned for future updates.

Thanks!
