Vertical featured image thumbnails cut off

Greetings:

This is one of the chronic problems I’ve always had with WordPress, but since I just bought your X theme, I’m re-experiencing it.

I manage a news site for some essay writers who are not technically literate. It took me forever to talk them into catching up with the 21st century and start attaching images to the articles they write. Now I’ve got them finally assigning featured images, but sometimes they upload vertically-aligned images - usually of people - and usually the peoples’ heads get cut off when WordPress resizes and creates thumbnails. Teaching my users how to crop and resize images before they upload is simply not in the cards.

Is there any realistic solution, besides accepting these decapitations, or going back to an image-free site?

Thanks,

E.

Hi E.

Sincerely the best solution is to provide your contributors size guidelines to their images or you to edit them once they uploaded. Have the images with a standard size will make your site look much more professional.

Could you please provide your URL so we can take a closer look?

Thank you

The site is a dev version, so I sent the link as a secure note. Thanks!

Hi there,

Cropping will always occur especially to maintain the aspect ratio. BUT, since the image is a background, then you may able to position it through CSS. Please add this to your global custom CSS

a.entry-thumb {
    background-position: top center;
}

But it has no effect to this kind of image http://www.northrop.ca/dooneys/wp-content/uploads/2017/10/scan.jpg since it’s already cropped on top when uploaded.

Thanks!

That snippet appears to have worked. Thanks Rad (and Joao)! I appreciate that a lot.

(The image you found of the kneeling guy with the baseball bat was indeed uploaded that way, but it’s ok - the kneeling guy is the only important subject in that image - even if it isn’t a great image).

Thanks again!

Edward

Glad to hear we managed to help.

Cheers!
