I can not find a safe answer here. My version of xtheme is installed as multisite and there is no option to update the theme. Other than FTP, how can I set this to automatically update to the newer theme versions?

Thanks for writing in! In most cases, you can update the theme and plugins in your My Sites > Network Admin > Dashboard > Updates. With X theme, since it needs validation or even if it is already validated, when you are in multi site, you will have to update it manually through ftp. There is no shortcut and have it through automatic updates.
