Upgrade WPBakery Visual Composer plugin

Hi
I would like to upgrade my WPBakery Visual Composer plugin.
I’m now at 4.3.5 and would like to upgrage to 5.5.5.
I’m running PHP 7
Website: www.haspenwood.com

When trying to upgrade I get the error:

Destination folder already exists. /data/sites/web/haspenwoodcom/www/wp-content/plugins/js_composer/
Plugin installation failed.

Should I deactive or delete the currently installed version, and can I do that without risking the loss of my content and formatting done by Bakery? Or is there another way to safely upgrade to the new version?

I checked with support at WPBakery, this is their response:
“You can deactivate and delete the existing version of the plugin and then install the standalone version which can be downloaded from your account. However, we would also suggest you to re-confirm the same with the theme author before proceeding, because if he has done any changes to the core plugin files, then they will be lost during this process, which in-turn can affect the content/layout at your end.”

Can anyone confirm from ThemCo confirm that I can deactive, delete and install without losing my content and formatting?

Cheers,
Erik

Hello Erik,

You are having a file permission issue where in during the update, the folder cannot be written because it already exist. To resolve this, simply log in to your FTP and browse to the plugins folder, /wp-content/plugins/ and delete the js_composer folder. This is the safest way to delete the plugin without deleting anything from the database. Once the folder is deleted, go back to X > Validation > Extensions and install the WP Bakery Visual Composer again.

Please let us know how it goes.

Allright, just did as suggested and it seems to do the trick!
Tx.
Erik

Glad to hear it’s sorted, Erik.

Cheers!
