When I activated a demo site designs and tried to edit it using cornerstone I was not able to change images at all. any suggestion

You need to go to WP Admin > X
Note that the standard demos will load with place holders and no inner pages. The inner pages can be assembled using Cornerstone Templates Pages and Blocks which you find inside Cornerstone.
The Expanded Demo offers all de content and inner pages assembled.
