Tracking modal clicks in Google Analytics

I’m having trouble finding the proper way to add Google Analytics Tracking into the modal elements.

I’m hoping that when a viewer clicks on the modal toggle, I can track that as an event but I just don’t know how to connect the dots. Tracking their exit out of the modal would be nice too.

Please forgive my ignorance. Part of me thinks the solution is right under my nose but I keep getting cross eyed. Hoping to expand my knowledge a bit to learn properly.
