The Grid Conflict with Yoast SEO

My question relates to The Grid plugin which was bundled with my X Theme purchase. The issue was discovered by Yoast support. Here’s how they explain it:

"We reviewed your WordPress setup and noticed you’re using The Grid plugin which conflicts with the prominent words functionality of Yoast SEO Premium. As you probably know, our plugin calculates the prominent words (words or word combinations that appear most often in your text) for every post and page. Yoast SEO Premium uses prominent words to find posts that use the same words and offer you internal linking suggestions. Please, refer to this post for more information: https://yoast.com/yoast-seo-4-0/

Prominent words in our plugin are created as private taxonomies. That means that other plugins or themes should not access them or display them. However, The Grid plugin does display them in every attachment details page and other areas of the backend of your website (see attached screenshot) which causes performance issues. If you temporarily deactivate The Grid plugin, the problem uploading images should be fixed."

Is this something you can help me fix? I do not want to discontinue using The Grid plugin but the performance issues it is causing are really hurting my productivity.

Thanks

Hi @Frank19

Thanks for writing in! I’m investigating this issue and so far I did the following:

  • I confirmed that we have the “latest” version of The Grid plugin bundled with the theme, which is version 2.6.20.
  • I’ve checked our issues tracker and I couldn’t find any thing related to The Grid and Yoast plugin has been reported before.
  • I’ve checked the comments page on The Grid CodeCanyon page and the only comment I found referencing Yoast plugin was this one, which isn’t related to the issue we are discussing here.

Since this issue is limited to “Yoast Premium” version -that I don’t have access to- I would appreciate if you can let us know the steps needed exactly to reproduce this issue (screenshots, video screencast would be highly appreciated) so we can report it to our dev team so they can contact “The Grid” plugin team about it.

Thanks.

Simply put, the issue is evident whenever I attempt to upload an image to a post or page using either the “Add Media” button or the “Featured Image” functionality.

When doing that with both of the referenced plugins active I experience large upload delays and browser connection errors.

When either of the two plugins is deactivated (eliminating the conflict) I am able to go back to uploading images with no problem.

The reason for the issues (as discovered by Yoast) is the private taxonomy issue described in my previous post.

If you need any additional info please let me know.

Thanks,
Frank

Hello Frank,

Thanks for updating the thread.

Can you please share the login details in a secure note for us to take a closer look into the Yoast SEO problem you are facing?

Thanks.

I have shared login details in a secure note above.

Please note that you can replicate the issue by creating a test post and attempting to upload an image (of any size) using the “Add Media” button. You’ll see that the upload will take a very long time and often results in connection errors.

If you deactivate the Yoast SEO Premium plugin or The Grid and then attempt to upload the image again you’ll see that the upload goes through with no issue.

Hey @Frank19,

Thanks for the credentials. I logged in a experienced the issue. There’s conflict going on even when just opening the page editor. Regretfully, as support, we don’t have the resources or capability to fix this kind of issues ourselves. With that said, we need to post this to our issue tracker so our development team will forward this to The Grid developers once they go through the list of reports. For now, you will need to disable Yoast Premium if you’re going to work on your page especially adding images. Please note that neither us nor The Grid developers can promise an immediate fix nor could we or they support Yoast Premium in the future.

Thank you for understanding.

Thank you for the update. It seems that the plugin that requires fixing is The Grid and not Yoast, since The Grid is somehow accessing Yoast’s private taxonomies and therefore creating a conflict.

I hope the plugin authors can generate a fix soon because I don’t want to stop using The Grid and it’s slowing my website down dramatically.

Thanks,
Frank
