The Grid and Vimeo Albums functionality

I am currently working on a staging domain for a new site I’m developing, and I want to use the features of The Grid combined with Vimeo integration.

I’m using the latest version of The Grid (2.7.3) and of X and Cornerstone.

Vimeo has a privacy feature which allows you to hide videos from Vimeo while embedding them on an external site. Videos hidden in this way can be added to albums. The feature is described here:

If you have a Pro account, you can add “hidden” videos to albums. Somewhat confusingly I believe Vimeo now refers to “albums” as “showcases”, but in any case the feature seems to be the same.

Once you have connected The Grid to Vimeo using the Client ID and App Secret, you can then select Vimeo under Source and then “albums” to pull in the playlist using the album ID.

I have successfully connected The Grid to Vimeo - I have tested this by adding our Vimeo user ID under the source settings. This allows The Grid to pull in all our public videos.

However, adding an album ID does not work to pull in playlists. Since it seems that Vimeo albums are now referred to as “showcases”, the only IDs I can choose are either the showcase ID or the folder ID. I have tried both, but neither of these work.

Thank you for providing a detailed description of the issue. Regretfully, we can’t provide immediate help for cases where a paid service like Vimeo Pro is used and we’re also not the developer of The Grid.

What we can do is submit this to our issue tracker so the person handling the bundled third-party plugins will forward this to The Grid support. Please post the staging access to your site and also access to your Vimeo Pro account in a Secure Note the developers would need to log in.

That might take some time though so it would be best that you purchase a standalone The Grid license and discuss this issue with The Grid developers directly. This way, they might include a fix faster than us having to submit the issue to them.

Aren’t you supposed to support the third-party plugins that are provided with the theme? I have looked into it further, and Vimeo have indeed simply changed the name of Albums to Showcases.

As this is a built-in feature of The Grid, one should be able to simply input the Showcase ID in the Album field within the grid:

To your question:

I believe you misunderstood what I said. I did not say that we will not support The Grid or any bundled third-party plugin. What I said is we can’t provide “IMMEDIATE HELP” for the reason stated previously. Also otherwise, I would not have asked for login credentials and submitted this in our issue tracker to be investigated.

My suggestion to purchase a standalone The Grid license is only “IF” you want to report directly to The Grid developers to save you some message relay time.

If you don’t want that suggestion, please kindly wait for our development team to investigate this case. This is likely a bug in The Grid in which case the developers are the only ones who’ll be able to included a fix in the next update of their plugin.

I also previously asked for Vimeo account access. Please provide it too in case none in our team has a Vimeo Pro account to replicate the issue and we also need to see your Vimeo setup.

I have purchased a standalone license for The Grid, and I will open a support thread with the developer.

Can you advise on the best way to upgrade the plugin to the premium version? I don’t see anywhere to input a purchase code.

Would you advise deactivate-delete-reinstall, or is this likely to lose my existing grids and custom skins?

Hi Michael,

First, please save a backup of your site as a precaution.

Then before you deactivate-delete-reinstall the plugin, you can export all your grid. This way you can import it later. Or it would be best if you can do this first on a staging site.

Then here’s your guide on how to register the plugin. Currently registration is disabled on the plugin version that comes with the theme.

Having purchased the plugin, here is a summary of the support responses I got from the developer (pretty poor in the circumstances):

Themeone: Unfortunately, this is not possible to display private videos from Vimeo in The Grid. Thank you for your understanding.

Me: Many thanks for your reply. To be honest I was expecting a little more support than this, having just paid for the plugin today. If you really cannot resolve the issue, perhaps you could issue a refund, since the bundled version would work fine for me in this case?

Themeone: For refund request you need to directly ask to Envato Market the reseller.

Me: Can you tell me if this would be possible with custom development? Since it’s entirely possible for showcases that are hidden on Vimeo to be embedded in an external site, it would be helpful if you could explain the obstacles you face with incorporating this feature into the plugin?

Themeone: You can take a look at WPKraken for customization. Of course everything is possible with custom development.

Me: I already have a developer that I work with. However, it would be helpful if you could share the reason you didn’t incorporate hidden showcase support into the plugin? Was there a particular problem, or a reason you didn’t include this feature?
