Switching to Twenty-Seventeen is erasing my widget assignments

Something weird going on. When I switch to Twenty-Seventeen, my widget assignments are getting erased. I’ve checked with all plugins disabled. Very strange as we’re just about to open the site (in terms of timing).

I was deeply in the process of getting clear on the sidebars and how they worked with the content, which means I’ll have to reassign everything, yet I want to know WHY this is happened. Plugins were all off when I did it.
