Submenu not fully visible (extends below page fold)

Hi,

We are having a problem with our site: http://www.stpeterslutheran.sa.edu.au/

The submenus pop out when hovered over, but parts of the menu display below the page fold The sidebar doesn’t scroll with the main page content so it’s not possible to click on some of the menu items. Is there a way to offset the menu so it’s all visible?

Thanks,

Travis

Hi Travis,

Thank you for writing in, with the numbers on your menu items, regretfully there is nothing we can do about this, but there are some suggestions.

  • Always see that you can clean up your amount of menu items altogether. In general, the more fractured and deep linking goes, the more users will get confused and not know where to go. As the site builder, it can feel like a good thing to break things up when in reality as a user it’s cleaner to have one destination to go to. For example, instead of an “About” link with 5 submenu links on “Our Company,” “Our Team,” “Our Process,” et cetera, try placing all of that content creatively into the “About” page. You can have sections on the page that discuss all that content, but having one destination is so much easier for a user to parse and work with. This is what we call “Information Architecture” and it’s just as important (if not more important) than the general design of the website itself.
  • The fixed left/right bars are really for creative displays of simple navigation on a website. Some top links, with maybe one submenu for each if needed, preferably with only a few links in those submenus as well due to the positioning constraints seen in these example videos.
  • One of the better ways to keep side navigations usable is if you have many top-level links and turn on the navbar scrolling option (Theme Options > Header). This can enable you to technically have an “infinite” amount of links that are always accessible no matter the screen size (still likely a bad idea in general though). The navbar scrolling is great to offer more flexibility, but remember it will disallow the use of submenus.

Thank you for understanding,
