Sub pages only work with simple permalinks

Hi there,

I migrated a website to a new domain and at first only the start page loaded. All of the sub pages showed a 404 error. I then switched the permalinks to simple. That seems to work, all pages are loading now but it can’t be the final solution for SEO and other reasons. Is there anything you have in mind that I could try?

I already checked the .htaccess file and there is only the standard WordPress content in it.

Thank you in advance for your help!

Best,
Christian

Hi Christian,

Thanks for reaching out.
I have checked your website and found the issue after creating a new sub-page. It only happens when the .htaccess file is not able to be modified due to the Permalink settings. If that is already working fine, there might be some different reasons behind your reason. I would like to suggest troubleshooting the following common issue to help us to recognize the reason.

  1. Theme Related Issue
  2. Plugin Conflict
  3. Theme Update related issue
  4. Child Theme Related issue
  5. CSS/JS Customization
  6. Disabling Cache
  7. Disabling CDN

If you discover that an issue is coming from a custom code or 3rd party plugin, kindly consult with a developer or contact the plugin author. Please note that we do not provide support for custom codes and 3rd party plugins.
If none of the above helps, please copy your live site to a staging server so we could troubleshoot freely without breaking your live site.
And give us access to the secure note including:

– WordPress Site URL & Login URL
– WordPress Admin username/password
– FTP/CPanel credentials as we may need to access the .htaccess file during the testing.

To create a secure note, click the key icon underneath any of your posts.

Hi tristup

Thank you for the feedback. I tested all of that and it didn’t change. I think it is a problem related to the migration of the website. I found the following post from the plugin I used for the migration:
https://updraftplus.com/faqs/migrating-site-front-page-works-pages-give-404-error/

I now contacted the company that is hosting the website. I’m not able to do that changes on my own, right? Even if I have access to FTP, MSQL and so on?

Thanks, Christian

Hello @arscommunication,

Yes, it is best that you contact your hosting provider and ask them why your WP Permalinks setting just returns Error 404.

Best Regards.
